The 1680x1050 resolution gives me all the screen real estate I need for programming, Web browsing, and the occasional image editing without making everything difficult to read as a higher resolution would (sadly, it's the year 2013 and Windows' DPI scaling is still pretty terrible).
This isn't an IPS panel, but I find the brightness, contrast, color, and viewing angles to be more than acceptable and easily adjustable.Testing revealed no backlight bleed, nor any noticeable color banding when viewing gradients. I also like that I can turn the brightness down a fair amount more than I could on my previous monitor, an Acer S201HL. This really helps to make things easier on the eyes during those long programming sessions. The matte display is accompanied by a matte bezel, which means no obnoxious glare and no OCD-inducing fingerprints.
Less important but still worth noting: the power and adjustment buttons are on the front of the monitor rather than the underside. While perhaps less aesthetically pleasing, front-facing buttons are just plain easier to use. Also, the blue LED power indicator is much smaller and less noticeable than the one on my previous monitor (which I actually had to cover with a piece of electrical tape). The power supply being built into the monitor itself also reduces clutter.
I can't speak as to the quality of the included stand, as I immediately attached the display to my Ergotron Neo-Flex stand. DVI and VGA cables are both included as well.
If you're looking for a good, decent-sized monitor for office use that doesn't cost a ton, I highly recommend this one.
Here are the issues (details below):
- Very poor contrast
- Bad dynamic brightness feature
- Thin lines in motion display in completely inaccurate colors
Contrast - It reminds me of the way LCD screens used to look when they were first becoming common. The settings let you opt for brighter whites with washed-out colors, or blacker blacks with dead colors. There is no happy balance to be had, as far as I can find. This is despite the fact that Acer claims the contrast ratio is astronomically superior to previous models ("100 Million:1" versus "2500:1" on my older X223W). I can't imagine how they managed to convince themselves of that.
Dynamic brightness - I guess it's one of the "power saving technologies" referred to in the specs, but it's ill-considered. It seems to darken or brighten the backlight depending on the total amount of light/dark in the complete picture currently being displayed. This is most apparent when playing full-screen video, where you can see the brightness fade in and out repeatedly across the entire screen. It usually just makes the picture much too dark in a very noticeable way and is quite annoying. I don't think there is any way to disable this (and I've looked -- a lot).Read more ›
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it just won't work with either Mac in our house when it's hooked up as a VGA monitor. Works fine as DVI, which is a better idea anyway, but not VGA. I understand this is a known problem with Acer monitors, that they sometimes won't work properly with VGA. I would suggest ordering a Thunderbolt/mini display to DVI adapter at the same time as the monitor, they're only about $7 from Amazon. I didn't, thought I had one, had a VGA instead, which is how I found out about the problem. Had to wait a couple of days to get the DVI adapter.
Again, the monitor works just fine, much better than I expected and just right for my use, photo editing, but potential buyers need to be aware of the VGA issue.

Good screen for the price. The Acer 22" is taller than many other models at 11 1/2 inches. If you hate these super wide but short screens this monitor is for you. Read morePublished 3 months ago by Amazon Customer
