Anthony David, Repackaged,
By Olukayode Balogun (Leeds, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Acey Duecy (Audio CD)
My buddies and I have had many an enjoyable discussion in recent times about the state of the music industry today, specifically, how there seems to be so many talented singer/songwriters out there who just don't seem to be getting their due props. We've come up with a variety of reasons why this might be, and why, conversely, there's never any shortage of talentless empty vessels making noise all over the radio and all over music television, their music riding high in the charts and getting people all excited in the clubs.
Ah, well. Georgia native Anthony David is definitely one of those people who's currently vastly underrated, in my opinion. He's got two albums under his belt but he's still relatively unknown - at least, compared to someone like, say, Ne-Yo or Chris Brown or Akon (though I fully accept that they perhaps don't make the same kind of music. Closer comparisons like Eric Roberson, Donnie, Frank McComb et al, are similarly below the radar). He released both albums independently; 3 Chords & the Truth in 2004 and The Red Clay Chronicles in 2006. I reviewed the latter some time ago and don't intend to repeat myself here but I will say that if you're looking for authentic mature-minded soul with a slight r&b edge, this is definitely the man for you. The two aforementioned albums are particularly relevant because this 'new' one does not actually contain any new material. It has 3 tracks from "3 Chords" and 8 from "Chronicles" so if you've got those two albums, there's absolutely no point in buying this one. As far as I can tell, the songs haven't been re-made, re-mixed or even re-mastered. They've simply been repackaged. I understand he's signed with a major label now and is obviously attempting to 'relaunch' his career. I'm not a huge fan of the idea in principle (and I'm still trying to make up my mind what I think about his new image) but I can definitely see how both might well ensure that he finally becomes the established part of the modern soul fraternity that he is supposed to be. If all goes to plan, this could launch him into the mainstream, which is obviously where he wants to be. Ordinarily I'd recommend his two previous releases over this. I'd say leave this one alone and wait for a genuinely new album but I like David so much, I've decided to be supportive. Besides, in these image conscious times, I'm well aware that some might be wondering if the album is worth checking out if only on the basis of the glossy ultra-urban CD cover pic. I say it is. It's not a "best of" in any sense of the phrase (for my money, they left a few good tunes out) but as a good value-for-money showcase and an introduction to people who may not have heard of him before now, it might just do the trick. For his sake, I sincerely hope it does.

The best album! The first single I heard was Words, the duet with Indie.Aire. I feel in love with his voice. When I saw this album on Amazon, I knew I needed to hear more and so I bought the album. I'm glad I did, no one hit wonder here!! The brother is awesome...this is a must have album!!!

Discovered Tony's music at great music store in Little 5 Points about 2 years ago. From the 1st track on Red Clay to the last...this is what true music lovers are missing in today's VIP lounging, lots of sex, and lots of money lyric filled music of today. With a voice as smooth as Bill Withers, to the lyrics that make you wish you were strollin through Piedmont Park...Tony is a true force to be reckoned with, and has true staying power. Consider this a "Best of Anthony David", but you will find that listening to this CD...you will head to the internet to purchase his first 2 CDs.

I heard the song "Words," a duet he sings with India.Arie on Vh-1 soul and I was hooked! Next, I heard his remake of the song "Something About You." His voice is like a cool drink of lemonade after a long, hot day. I love the blues, folk-rock, r & b feel to this cd. If you are tired of hearing the re-run state of music today, check Anthony David's Acey Duecy out. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!
My favorite songs are: Stop Playin' Words Something About You Kinfolk

Folks,
The work is good. Come again, the work is great. Several folks are upset they didn't realize it was a compliation set of his first two albums. Ummm, YEAH!!! Thus the name of the album "Acey Deucey"...get if folks?? 1&2!! :-) Just look at the additional purchase as sowing a seed into a finely developed, underappreciated musical prodigy.

For those of you who don't know, this is a compilation of Anthony's 1st 2 albums which were released on an independent label. He was finally signed to a major record label and is getting much deserved recognition. Since his 1st 2 albums were so deliciously soulful, the new record label wanted to give the public a sample of what the rest of us have already known; therefore, they re-released some of his best songs, so if you have his 1st 2 albums, you don't need to buy Acey Ducey. With that said, Anthony David has a unique sound and rest assured, when he comes out with new songs, they will be of equal quality, if not better. He is one of the few artists whereby, 90% of the songs on the CD are great. I love his voice and his sound.

Anthony was in Glenside, PA opening up for Dwele and Leela James, his music was filled with soul...neo soul actually! first heard of him and India Arie on a duet in VH1, felt I totally missed out on his music, which is not played on the radio, unless you have XM Radio, bottom line this album is sensual and acoustic...definitely a must have!!! Please listen to Cold Turkey, you wont be disappointed!

Made a fan outta me,

I picked this CD up sight unseen, because I saw he has a duet with India.Arie. I hadn't heard anything about him; I just know that Ms. Arie is an amazingly thoughtful person and a very skilled musician/lyricist. If she's sharing a song with Anthony David, he MUST be serious. I'm glad I bought this third release of his first, because it makes me want to find his first CD asap. Dude has a mature, experienced voice; one that doesn't have to run laps, do flips or headstands to earn your attention or respect. It's a voice of experience; one that says, "you need to listen up, cuz I know what I'm talkin' about."
Very thoughtful, articulate lyrics, too. I know, I know...in one tune he's callin' out the playas, in the next he's rollin' a joint and settin' up a booty call; then in the next he's confessing to being a habitual cheater. But hey...that's real life. These aren't depictions of life as it should be; A.D. is tellin' it like it is. I must say that while I understand "Acey Duecy" is a compilation of 'best of' tunes, I can't help thinking that there's a message in the selection of these tunes. The message? "Here's a real man...the good, the bad, and the ugly. Take it or leave it." I for one am glad that someone is in tune with a real man's thought life. No guy is perfect, and all of us are either struggling with some character issue, or have overcome them. A.D. seems to be speaking for brothas that may fall short on occasion, but keep trying to do right. Message received. I'll take it. Hope you will too.

The duet with India Arie was the inspiration for this purchase; however, I was more than pleasantly surprised to find that Anthony David was a Star in hidding. Acy Duecy has marked me a Fan For Life. . .Track #6 :)

Let me start by saying that Anthony David has a magnificent voice but I feel that most of his talent was wasted here. With this largely hiphop sometimes ghetto material.
The songs Words and Stop playin are the songs that I like on here apart from them I am hard pressed due to the thuggish nature of some of his lyrics. For example the song Smoke one could have been great because it has an awesome beat and tempo and He wastes this track describing hooking up with a women he has not seen in a while, so he goes on to say smoke one with your boy , drink one and lets do something bad to get reaqqainted instead of making this into a romantic ballad he chose to go really "hood". Which is not always wrong but I felt that it was not appropriate here. Also many of his lyrics are rudimentary and way too basic. When I heard the range of the song Words with India Irie. I rushed out and bought this CD. Sadly to say that most of the rest of the CD apart from Words is dissappointing and it kind of puts you in the mind of Lyfe Jenning's 2nd CD The Phoenix, which I was totally not feeling either. Sorry Anthony but you took something that could have been great and made it blah. Many mature R&B music listening fans will understand what I mean when you take a listen to most of the lyrics on here. |
