4.0 out of 5 stars AN ACHE IN ALL CURS GOES THE EASEL, July 7, 2001

AN ACHE IN EVERY STAKE (1942) - An excellent Stooge short. The Stooges are icemen who decide to help a desperate lady by cooking for her husband's birthday party. This is one of the best Stooge shorts, and this just may be the best short that features Curly Howard's talents. In every scene, he steals his show with his hilarious facial and vocal expressions, his hilarious moves, and wonderfully timed gags. There's never a bad moment in this film. Even the ending is hilarious. A classic.

CALLING ALL CURS (1939) - This short has the Stooges as operators of a dog hospital. A pretty good short. This has a lot of funny visuals in the hospital scenes. All those dogs were cute, and it must've been especially exciting for Curly to do this short since he loved dogs. The fight at the end is the highlight.

POP GOES THE EASEL (1935) - One of the boys' earlier shorts. This one has the boys' as hoboes, ducking from a cop in an art school, and posing as art students. This short is most special in that it contains the very first pie fight (okay, so technically, it's not a pie fight here, but it's practically the same thing). Other special things about this film is that it's the first short directed by Del Lord, their best director, and this short features one scene with Moe and Larry's daughters (they're the two girls in the background when the Stooges are jumping hopscotch). A great film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good tape., January 16, 2002

AN ACHE IN EVERY STAKE is one of the best Three Stooges shorts ever made. In a way, it's a remake of the Laurel and Hardy classic, THE MUSIC BOX. However, the scenes where the Stooges are chefs is a brand new idea. The ending was hilarious. I almost died laughing at this short.

CALLING ALL CURS was pretty funny. The whole short had some great scenes, especially when the dogs are all eating at the table. The fight at the end was pretty good.

POP GOES THE EASEL- A very funny short. This is where the first Three Stooges food fight takes place. It's not exactly pies or food, but clay. An extremely funny clay fight at the end makes this a very funny short.

For Stooge lovers, An Ache in Every Stake is the all-time classic. From Moe and Larry trying to get Curly's head out of a block of ice, to ending up with an ice cube at the top of the stairs, to the exploding cake. It's a "must see" if you truely love the Stooges.

4.0 out of 5 stars Three good ones with Curly, April 27, 2000

This review is from: An Ache In Every Stake [VHS] (VHS Tape)
These three shorts will be familiar to Stooge fans. AN ACHE IN EVERY STAKE casts the Stooges as icemen turned caterers at a birthday party. (Watch for one of Curly's all-time greatest facial reactions.) They're dog doctors in CALLING ALL CURS, and art students in POP GOES THE EASEL. (This last one has a slapstick battle at the end that's reminiscent of Mack Sennett's silent comedies.) A fine addition to your comedy library. Print quality is excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars The All-Time Stooges Classic!, March 5, 2000

This has got to be the funniest short they ever made. The opening with the stairs and icebox are a classic stooge miscue that starts the mania! If you like Curly, you've got to see this one. No Stooge collection would be complete without this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Clay in the Face, October 7, 2006
This review is from: An Ache In Every Stake [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This videotape includes three shorts starring Curly as the third stooge in the team of Moe and Larry.

An Ache in Every Stake starts off with the men as icemen delivering blocks of ice to warm and thirsty clients. One such client is a woman whose house is so far up a hill, that the ice melts by the time Curly gets to her. It just so happens that this house is owned by a man who the stooges annoyed earlier, but they manage to weasel into a job as cooks for the man's birthday party. The cooking scene should feel familiar; it was done again later with Shemp. There is also a reused gag with a spring attached to Curly's pants.

Calling All Curs has a unique story to occupy the stooges. They are doctors in an animal hospital and give only the best care to the sick dogs and cats. One such dog is a prize winning show dog. The stooges manage to have it kidnapped for a ransom, but try to cover up the situation by masquerading another dog in its place. The stooges are all in top form here; Moe has a hilarious bit with a telephone. Even Larry stands out with some cleverly delivered lines. It also helps that the animals are so cute.

Pop Goes the Easel is a very funny short featuring the stooges running from the cops (as always). They find their way into an art school and are mistaken for three new students. They are constantly donning new disguises to duck the cop, though he always gets wise to their shenanigans. The parts where the stooges actually attempt to create something artistic are a laugh a minute, and the ending is a riot, literally. This is a great way to end the tape, on a very high note.
