5.0 out of 5 stars A Proven Study Guide, June 16, 2006
This review is from: Achieve PMP Exam Success PMBOK Guide -- 3rd Edition (Paperback)
Planning on taking the PMP® or CAPM® exam in the near future? The most important choice you'll need to make is what materials to study to be adequately prepared. The first book you must select for your studying is PMI's A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) - Third Edition. The second book I recommend is Achieve PMP® Exam Success by Margaret Chu, Diane Altwies, and Edward Walker.

For years, the PMI-Orange County (CA) chapter has successfully relied on the combination of the PMBOK® Guide and Achieve PMP® Exam Success as the only two texts used to help our membership prepare to take the PMP exam. We have proven this new edition in the classroom. It continues in the tradition of excellence by integrating the PMBOK Guide and other recognized project management expert sources into its text and, more importantly, into the practice questions provided.

Chu, Altwies, and Walker recognize that adult students learn by doing. Students must practice test taking. The book and accompanying CD-ROM contain over 800 practice exam questions. The materials provide students with an opportunity to take a pre-assessment, a sample exam after each chapter, a post-assessment, and simulated timed four-hour exams. The answers provided for each question reference the appropriate PMBOK Guide section for students to review concepts with which they may be struggling. Take the practice exam questions often throughout your study process.

Besides the many practice questions, the book provides students with an opportunity to complete many hands-on learning experiences through creating project documentation for the Lawrence RV Garage Project. I strongly encourage each student to complete every hands-on exercise. These exercises will prepare you for the story problems found on the exam.

Chu, Altwies, and Walker also realize that an essential part of exam preparation is rote memorization of key project management terms as defined in the PMBOK Guide. The downloadable flashcards are thorough. The downloading process is simple and very user friendly.

Finally, Achieve PMP® Exam Success contains many tips and tricks on how to prepare for the exam. The study tips are clearly based on the years of experience that the authors have in preparing students to take the PMP exam.

I strongly recommend Achieve PMP® Exam Success. It contains all the elements necessary for students to pass the PMP exam - integration with the PMBOK Guide, hands-on learning experiences, clear definition of key terms, and exam taking tips. Best wishes for your PMP exam success!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Approach I've seen, November 16, 2005
This review is from: Achieve PMP Exam Success PMBOK Guide -- 3rd Edition (Paperback)
This book is designed to be used side by side with the PMI's Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Guide. The Guide is, of course, the official and formal word. Reading/studying it is another matter. Having the two next to each other allows an understandable 'plain English' description of what the official language says to present two versions, two wordings of the critical points to come across and perhaps to stick.

This is the third edition of this book, and it matches the PMBOK third edition, commonly called PMBOK Guide 2004. The changes in the PMBOK Guide became integrated into the PMP Exam in September of 2005.

Along with the book comes a CD-ROM with over 800 practice exam questions which simulate the full PMP test. The post-assessment tests and answers help evaluate your progress and readiness for the exam. Finally the publisher makes available a specialized web site to provide further exam preparation materials.

The approach used in this book is better than that I've seen in any other prep manual.

5.0 out of 5 stars Help in Passing the PMP Exam is Here, June 8, 2006

This review is from: Achieve PMP Exam Success PMBOK Guide -- 3rd Edition (Paperback)
I found "Achieve PMP Exam Success" to be very beneficial in studying for the PMP Exam! All the exercises and practice questions were especially helpful. It provides a foundation for learning and structure to your exam preparation, thus saving you study time. It certainly is a more friendly read than the PMBOK guide, and it offers insights that the PMBOK does not offer.
