4.0 out of 5 stars Fun With Germs, September 27, 2003
By
neinkats (Tucson, AZ United States) - See all my reviews
Achoo! has to be in my classroom. I want my students to read this book, discuss each topic, and do all the activities. ItŐs fun, itŐs relevant, itŐs engaging, itŐs not too long, itŐs full of good, up-to-date information and scientific methodology. Like Momma BearŐs soup, itŐs just right.

Achoo! is about good and bad germs, what they are (viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoa), how they live in and on us and our surroundings, how they effect our lives (disease, body odor, halitosis, pimples, etc.), and how we have learned to deal with them (immunity, antibiotics, vaccines, hygiene, etc.).

For a book that is only 40 pages long, it is full of accurate information presented in manageable sub topics, with appropriate safety cautions, and colorful, relevant, and amusing illustrations. Eight ÒYou Try ItÓ activities expand the studentŐs understanding with both quick and days-long investigations that can be done in class and/or at home using simple materials. The reading level, format, readability, and the ages of the young people in the illustrations will be attractive and understandable to the target age group of 9-14 years.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for hygiene lessons, July 31, 2011
This review is from: Achoo: The Most Interesting Book You'll Ever Read About Germs (Mysterious You) (Paperback)
This book is a good book for an introduction to germs, hygiene and infection control. The students will be able to decipher the good and bad effects of germs, how to avoid them and how to help others maintain good health. Classes benefit when they read this book because of the information shared and because it increases their motivation for a cleanliness. Make sure to emphasize the good and bad of sanitary environments. Having a too clean lifestyle can actually leave a person open to illnesses and diseases. The best the students should strive for is a balance.

This book is best when paired with a hygiene lesson, environmental cleaning activity or other infection control game.
