Product Description

The year is 1943. The Wehrmacht has begun Operation Hawk in an attempt to capture Kharkov with its steel claws. The SS Division Totenkopf has moved forward to crush the Soviet tank forces, but the Red Army has held the line, digging in and putting up a fierce resistance. In response, German tank armies have renewed their offensive with Operation Panther, and Soviet tank crews are now finding themselves severely outnumbered.

From the Manufacturer

Achtung Panzer Kharkov 1943

Want to step into the role of a commander in the very heart of Kharkov's defense? You'll have everything the officers had back then: tanks, guns, and fearless soldiers. The success of each opposing force hangs in the balance every day. Your decisions will etermine who wins the Battle of Kharkov.

  • High replayability and flexible AI: "smart" AI analyzes the players tactical movements and chooses the best strategy based on behavior rather than a script. Scenarios can be replayed using different tactics, as though playing against a human opponent.
  • Painstaking reconstruction of Kharko in scope and size.
  • Detailed recreation of weapons, artillery, and vehicles: all battle characteristics, including missile trajectories and crew numbers, have been modelled according to archived military records and WW2 chronicles.
  • Dynamic day, night and weather effects, all of which affect combat through terrain traversability, battlefield visibility, hidden force capabilities, and more.
  • Destructible environment: nearly everything can be blasted and destroyed, from ground terrain to houses and enemy defenses. All traces of previous battles (shell holes, broken vehicles, corpses, etc.) remain on the battlefield.

This simulator is a must-have for WWII grognards. The physics modeling is excellent: ballistics, penetration calculations for different kinds of rounds and armor, modeling motion of vehicles on various kinds of terrain.
The AI is not dumb at all (there is always room for improvement in the AI of any game). Once you understand the user interface commands you can make tanks take hull down positions on their own, reverse when necessary (thank God in this sim tanks do not turn around when you want them to get the hell out of a hot spot).
Accomplishing goals requires tactical thinking. One has to consider the landscape, lines of sight, relative strengths of units, cover provided by buildings and forests, likely routes of advance of enemy units.
Winning depends on how you use your limited resources, not on having the most powerful units.

Oh and the burned out hulks of vehicles from previous battles of a scenario remain on the maps ! Provides a nice atmospheric touch.

This is a combat sim nirvana.

Don't listen to the guy who claims the game crawls. I've played the game on my laptop (nothing special 'cept for dual core) and it runs just fine. Yes, this game is very realistic so often times it will take a long time for things to happen and distances are large, just like in real life. If you're looking for realism this is the game you want. If you want arcadey, Company of Heroes, or Command and Conquer games then you will agree with the previous poster who gave this game one star.

This game is exceptionally well done and unique. It is hard to get it figured out because the "tutorial" isn't much good but the game is worth every minute of your time trying to. Amongst other aspects described below, the attention to detail and accuracy, both graphically and historically is amazing; right down to the correct rust pattern on the vehicles tailpipes.

This isn't a game for the casual player or anything but the brightest teenager though. It is very in-depth and requires a mature mind to enjoy it and to be good at it. Your AI enemy will cut you no slack whatsoever and will oftentimes be a much better player than you are, even if you cripple him in the settings. You better have a good mind for strategy... and lot's of patience because you'll spend a good amount of time not only trying to figure the game out but slowly pushing across the frozen landscape in search of the enemy after you do. Don't worry you will find him... or he will find you, and you can increase the time alotted to battle in the settings.

On the upside, the fighting is intense and very realistic. In fact, this is the most realistic simulation of large scale warfare I have ever seen and I've played my fair share of them. Definitely on par, although in a different genre, with ArmA II and the Operation Flashpoint series up to and INCLUDING (unfortunately not going beyond) Dragon Rising.

If you like this kind of "game" you really need to give this one a go. It's a great simulator that for some reason is flying under everyone's radar.

Oh yeah, works great on Windows 7 64 bit.

Graphics are quite good... But, since I'm a much older man, I have some problems understanding and getting the program to do what it's supposed to do. Once it's running, I find it intersting.

The ground war equivalent of Distant Thunder and Forgotten Battles, Unbelievable graphics and sound effects create a "you are there" atmosphere.AI is smart and credible in it's reactions. A military simulation in the truest sense and not a game.

no manual, need to spend a lot of time to figure out how to play the game. It's fun and I'd say it was a good buy

The game started right in the middle of some crazy tactical battle with no training or start screen that comes standard with every other game known to man..So I said what the heck and jumped right in (sink or swim mode) and 5 mins of loading the game crashes. No updates or anything else that would help me figure out what went wrong. My personal opinion..Stay away from this game. Thank the all mighty, The game came in a bundle and the two games I wanted out of the bundle more than made up for this games failure.

This game looks potentially amazing, but a generally laggy, unresponsive camera, that inexplicably accelerates, then refuses to move, is too damaging to the experience. Trying to move the camera around the battlefield is a constant headache.

I should be fighting the enemies, not the bad camera and interface.

Two stars for graphics and concept, but I recommend no one buy this.
