Impressive Work on a Huge Field, July 30, 2006
This review is from: The Acid Trip: A Complete Guide to Psychedelic Music (Paperback)
I Borrowed this book from a friend of mine many years ago and then bought my own copy. I have a few things to say positive and negative about the book.
Positive:
Joynson tackled a huge project and managed to maintain the context of the music and not lose its significance in a jumble of names, dates and places. The topical address of various groups is concise and tend towards a perfect distillation. It is invaluable to the 60s and 70s psychedelia collector.
Negative: Somebody took a big bite without anyway to chew it. The book is edited poorly in places, like somebody didn't bother to check it all over well...there are typographical errors, factual errors and general misprints. There are bands missing. The bands I wanted to just have some mention, with a discography, I found nothing. What about Velvett Fogg? Fraternity of Man? Poe?
Ultimately, don't expect a book that is all things to all people. Its a great book to have, buy it.
