I am private math SAT tutor and a math professor at a top tier university in New England, and I recommend this book without reservation. The problems are thorough and serve as an excellent refresher for the types of problems found on the new SAT 1 math portions.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much material
After reading the reviews for this book I thought for sure it would be a huge help. But... it wasn't. There's around 20 sections and although that might not seem that bad, for someone who is going high school five days a week and has hours of homework every night it is. Also, the information and examples presented at the beginning of each section are not sufficient...

I am private math SAT tutor and a math professor at a top tier university in New England, and I recommend this book without reservation. The problems are thorough and serve as an excellent refresher for the types of problems found on the new SAT 1 math portions.

If you are looking for a review book that prepares you and then a little bit more for the SAT 1 test, this will do it. This book assumes you have a good foundation on high school math to begin with; but if you are looking for a cookbook to fill the voids in your math foundation, this review book does not provide that level of hand-holding.

I use this book when I tutor students for the SAT 1 math sections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good and comprehensive, May 1, 2005

This book is a very fine book to study in preparation for the New SAT I. I've studied MANY different SAT books as a student. This book offers problems that may be given on the SAT's that I have not seen in other books. There are all levels of difficulties also. There is no "fluffy" pages with wordy explanations. Its explanations and summaries of every topic is concise and understandable. A major plus of this book is that it offers MANY math problems of every subject covered on the SAT I. (the key way in getting a higher score is being exposed to many types of problems and becoming familiar with them through repeated exercises) Each page of this book is worth its money.

5.0 out of 5 stars A No-Nonsense Book that will Boost Your SAT I Math Score, February 5, 2005
This review is from: Acing the New SAT I Math (Paperback)
If you are looking for an SAT I math text geared to the new 2005 SAT with enough practice problems to sink a battleship, this is it. The book has accurate, succinct reviews of the SAT's key math concepts including all of the new topics starting with the March 2005 administration of the exam. No superfluous page-wasting garbage like in Up Your Score or SATs for Dummies. The meat of this book is problem after problem organized by topic so you can focus on your weak areas. The only real way to improve your SAT math score is to work through a truckload of problems in order to gain speed and confidence in your problem-solving skills. Notwithstanding the claims of the internet quick-buck artists anxious to sell you the "SAT secrets" and take your money, there are no short-cut gimmicks to boost your scores. Problem solving techniques such as substituting variables and backsolving can be useful, but Princeton Review and the other test prep companies dramatically OVERSTATE their usage. They are time-consuming and backsolving often can't be used on the more difficult questions. The sad reality is that the best way to smoke SAT I math is to know your stuff -- and this book delivers. By the way, I am not a student. I am a consistent 99th percentile scorer who owns a math learning center and tutors SAT I Math as part of my curriculum.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, you can increase your SAT I math score dramatically, April 24, 2007

By using this book as a study guide, my daughter increased her SAT I math score by 110 points. She did this over the course of 25 days, doing a section of the book each day in addition to her other school work. She was motivated to do this by the need to increase her score to qualify for a program that she was interested in.
I chose this book for her because it was laid out in managable chapters and had a review at the end of each section. Of all the SAT math review books, this one seemed to approach the subject in the most logical fashion.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much material, September 25, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Acing the New SAT I Math (Paperback)
After reading the reviews for this book I thought for sure it would be a huge help. But... it wasn't. There's around 20 sections and although that might not seem that bad, for someone who is going high school five days a week and has hours of homework every night it is. Also, the information and examples presented at the beginning of each section are not sufficient enough. The book will give a simple example to explain a concept and then when you work on the practice questions they will be much harder. Too often I find myself scratching my head and turning to the answer page for an explanation and so instead of actually working through the problems myself and getting better at the process that goes with it I am actually just trying to remember how the book did it. If you are planning to get a high score and want an all around great book for the SAT I would suggest Baron's 2400 Aiming for the perfect score. It's a much more doable book and the math section is extremely helpful.

1.0 out of 5 stars Missing 30 pages in the middle, April 27, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Acing the New SAT I Math (Paperback)
I ordered this book for my daughter. While studying for the SAT's she realized about 30 pages are missing in the middle of the book starting at page 90. Unfortunately, she found this out 5 months later when she started to use the book. Be sure to check your copy when you receive it.
