5.0 out of 5 stars Truly the Acme, August 20, 2008
This review is from: Acme 6001 Juicer - Juicerator Household Centrifugal Juicer
Acme juicers are made by Waring now as they have been for the past twenty years or so. One can buy the identical juicer as the Waring Commercial, so price shopping may prove fruitful.

I'll state that I've used Acme juicers for 30 years and the one I own now I've had for a number of years. The design hasn't changed, though, and my juicer uses the same supplies and parts.

Though the Acme appears quite similar to the Omega 1000/9000 series, there is one important design difference. If you look at the photo of the Acme you will see there are no moving arms on either side to hold the lid down. Apparently these arms are an Achilles' heel for Omega owners, breaking over time. The Acme uses no arms. The lid is placed on top of the bowl, then a short twist locks the lid to the side arms. No hanging, moving parts to break, and it's extremely quick and easy and secure. I'm sure when the guys breaking away from Acme decided to essentially copy the Acme design they couldn't take this with them, so they went with breakable arms. I can only say that after thousands of openings and closings with my Acme, the lid is as secure and workable as it was when new.

As can be seen, this isn't one of the so-popular pulp ejectors with the slanted slotted basket to throw pulp out. Upon opening the lid and looking inside, the sheer size of the straight-sided pulp catcher is impressive after looking at so many little slanted baskets. The pulp catcher is large enough to easily accommodate my man's hand for cleaning. And, of course, the outer stainless steel container is even larger. Because those of us who do serious juicing know that periodically the cutting blades will dull and need replacement, the cutting blades are on a very heavy stainless weighted disc, separate. At this time the cost is around $30 to replace this heavy cutting disc; full-sized Omegas and Acmes use the same disc. And, of course, the big juice bar commercial juicers also feature replaceable cutting discs. There is a large threaded shaft coming up from the motor in the middle. A large, easily-handled knob with built-in spring clutch threads on the shaft after dropping the heavy cutting disc on the shaft. Alignment of the cutting disc is automatic, no fiddling required. Total assembly of the stainless steel basket, outer container, cutting disc and lid is extremely easy and fast compared to so many newer generation juicers. Just a classic design that truly hasn't been improved.

This is a massive and heavy appliance and it sets on a dozen or so rubber feet; in years I've never known the thing to walk an inch. These big rubber feet (some are visible in the photo) dampen vibration perfectly. Upon turning the machine on, the noise level is quite low compared to so many juicers, rather a low, whooshing noise. The basket spins at 60rpm/second. This may not be as fast as some machines, but one must remember the large diameter of the pulp basket. It gains speed quickly in a few seconds is at operating speed. I'm not going to jam produce into any juicer like some of those idiots on infomercials, and this juicer easily takes care of firm vegetables. The best method for leafy greens is to roll them up into a roll or a ball to give sufficient firmness for the cutting disc. No, this juicer doesn't extract the same amount of juice for leafy greens. Buy a masticator if you want primarily those.

After use, it does take a half minute or so for the basket to slowly return to idle. I will say this juicer will easily produce a couple of 16-ounce glasses of carrot/beet/celery type juice before requiring cleaning of the pulp container. And boy, is it dry! Can't squeeze a drop out. I keep reading how much harder this basket is to clean than pulp ejectors. Not in my opinion. Because of its great size, I can easily reach inside. Not only that, because it isn't slanted on the circumference, pulp somehow doesn't get a grip. I never have to use a brush on this basket, just running water and my hand.

I know this review is long, but there isn't a lot of publicity about a juicer that was one of the bedrocks of juicing, and still should be. Unlike so many of these little foreign-made machines selling like hotcakes now, this juicer will be around for your grandchildren--and parts are still completely available. Hope this helps those considering--and compare the lid lock with Omega!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Juicer, November 9, 2007
This review is from: Acme 6001 Juicer - Juicerator Household Centrifugal Juicer
The 6001 makes fantastic quality juice, without the pulp. I can't stand much pulp, nor can I stand fruits & veggies in general.

It can make about 16-24 oz of juice before you have to change the filter. The filters are not 100% mandatory, but if you don't use them, your cleanup time triples easily. So use them.

I have a routine in the morning where I can assemble, juice, and clean in about 18-20 minutes. That gives me about 16oz or so of the best quality juice you can imagine.

Keep in mind - filters make easy cleanup, keep your fruit/veggies in the fridge overnight before juicing (keeps the blade temp down which prevents the death of the good stuff in your produce before you drink it), and cleanup should happen pretty much right after you juice, or it gets harder to clean.

The 5001 has some plastic, and I prefer all stainless-steel, so that is why I got the 6001. No stains long term with the all stainless product.

If you hate eating your fruits & vegetables, then this product is probably one of the best ways to get essential living nutrients in 20 minutes per day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic juicer!, April 11, 2007

This review is from: Acme 6001 Juicer - Juicerator Household Centrifugal Juicer
This juicer does a wonderful job separating juice from pulp! It will quickly and efficiently juice carrots, radishes, beets, pineapple, apple, strawberries, kiwi, celery, etc.

Pros: Quickly turns fruit and veggies into juice, relatively quiet, simple to clean when using a filter, many very good recipes available online.

Cons: Can only make about 2 pints before the filter should be changed, can be difficult to clean if you do not use a filter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little workhorse but..., February 6, 2010

This review is from: Acme 6001 Juicer - Juicerator Household Centrifugal Juicer
Let me start by saying that I love this little machine. It's a great workhorse and gets the job done. No pulp, just pure fresh juice. I love everything about it and the clean up part is easy. It is easy to clean but...I can't juice as much as I like without having to clean it out and put in another filter and start again. Okay I hate the interruption. I love juicing a whole bag of carrots at once for my entire day. Yes, sometimes I only drink carrot juice all day. LOL My old juicer was able to handle this but with this juicer I always have to stop and clean it and start again. Otherwise the juice will not flow through and it will back up in the filter area and can become very messy. But I love this little machine and I think I will have it for a long, long time to come.

Update***I hate this juicer now. Ugh, the frustration. I just juiced 4 skinny carrots and a cucumber and nothing else will go through it, it began to gyrate and made a huge mess. My old juicer handled a huge amount of carrots because the waste went into the basket.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful first time juicer, May 10, 2010

This review is from: Acme 6001 Juicer - Juicerator Household Centrifugal Juicer
I bought this exact juicer used through craigslist. The previous owner upgraded to a larger juicer. I have to say that since I'm only juicing for myself that I'm very satisfied with the product! I read some of the user reviews that the lid was falling off, and the only way that I've found that to be possible is if you were over filling it with fruits or vegetables. I've found it will make 2 - 8oz glasses of juice. Even then, depending on the type of fruit or veggie you used, you might need to clean out the filter in between before you finish. I would recommend this, even if it adds time to your juicing but it's better to preserve your motor. It's not "quiet" but it also isn't so distrubing you're scared to turn it on. It's about like a small vacuum running. My cats aren't afraid of it, and my little neice has been known to nap right through it.
Also, I've found that it isn't necessary to by the $50+ citrus attachment. That's a scheme in my opinion! I juice oranges and lemons just fine. Of course, I take the peels off first. The only difference is the clean up time. Yes, you'll spend a little extra time (2 minutes) cleaning the parts. But, what's the difference? If you had the attachment, you'd still be spending time cleaning that thing, too. You don't need the attachement. Overall, it's been a great product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Acme Juicerator FAST! EASY! QUIET!, August 6, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Acme 6001 Juicer - Juicerator Household Centrifugal Juicer
Hi!
My old Juiceman Pro juicer bit the dust and I had to get a new one. I got the Acme because it looks like it may last a long time and it has a 10 year guarantee. I was worried if I made the right choice.

It just arrived today Friday after ordering late Tuesday!

I LOVE the Acme Juicerator!

It is SO EASY to use!

It is SO EASY to clean!

It makes WAY MORE JUICE out of carrots!

It is WAY WAY WAY more quiet than my earlier juicer! I am going to be able to make juice when my roommate is sleeping!

When finished using it, you simply take the parts and rinse them clean!

Even the strainer basket comes clean just with running water and using your fingers a bit on the inside.

It doesn't spit pulp out all over the wall and counter; the pulp stays inside the strainer basket until YOU decide to remove it.

If you think there is too much pulp inside, it's a snap to turn off the machine, remove the top, and take some pulp out of the basket.

It makes juicing SO MUCH FASTER AND EASIER!

I am amazed. I did have to cut the carrots near the top because they were too big for the opening but even with that, it took way less time to juice than the old juicer did.

And the juice is SO GOOD!

You will love it. It makes no mess and it makes juicing so easy you can simply decide to have a glass of juice, without it being a big deal. Wow! What an amazing difference!

3.0 out of 5 stars Durability issues, warranty repairs a hassle, skip citrus attachment, February 25, 2011

This review is from: Acme 6001 Juicer - Juicerator Household Centrifugal Juicer
Acme 6001 Juicer - Juicerator Household Centrifugal Juicer
I've had the 6001 three years - it has great centrifuge and filtering action, squeezing the last drop out of your vegetables, and an optional high-speed orange juicer attachment that wrings out the citrus. However, there are limitations and issues to be aware of:

1) The grinder disk "blade" goes dull after a year or less of weekly use - new blades cost $35-55. Yearly.
2) The blade goes dull gradually, so it's not obvious when it goes dull, but it's obvious that the juicer works better with a fresh grinder blade.
3) Pushing down moderately hard to make the citrus juicer attachment work, or to make the vegetable juicer work with a dull blade, or to juice leafy vegetables, over 2-3 years wears out or breaks parts that can easily cost over $100 to replace. This is a design flaw.
4) If you like a lot of vegetable juice at once, it's difficult to know when the centrifuge basket is full of pulp and needs to be emptied. The main way of telling is when it's too late and pulp is overflowing into your juice and getting into the machinery. Another design flaw.
5) Apple skins and thin pieces of vegetable can slip past the blade and into the centrifuge filter basket, unbalancing the unit and causing it to lurch and shake violently.
6) The company is uncooperative in honoring, or even acknowledging, the 10-year warranty on the 6001. Confronted with the problem in #3 above, it took quite a bit of arguing to get them to even acknowledge that all parts, other than the blade and citrus attachment, are under 10-year warranty. They initially didn't even acknowledge that there was a 10-year warranty, although it couldn't be clearer in the owner's literature they provide. The initial assessment from their authorized repair shop was that repairs would cost approximately the cost of a new juicer.

Any juicer will have its limitations, and perhaps these issues are tolerable. Altogether, though, I recommend the Omega Model 8002 juicer (or it's current equivalent model) instead, which I have owned for 4 years. This model masticates vegetables to squeeze juice out and extrudes dry pulp through a separate opening. It's better designed for disposing of pulp, ease of cleaning, and durability, although the juice it produces is slightly less filtered than with the 6001 and the main extruder part needs replacing approx. every 2-3 years with weekly use. It's also relatively quiet compared to the 6001's power-tool-like racket. As for citrus juicing, a more traditional electric citrus juicer is probably more durable and a better value than the 6001 in the long run.

5.0 out of 5 stars Acme really is the zenith in juicers, January 11, 2011
By
This review is from: Acme 6001 Juicer - Juicerator Household Centrifugal Juicer
It is a pleasure to use this substantial precision-made machine.

I was very grateful to other reviewers for sharing their opinions about this juicer; they were instrumental in my choosing this unit. As I read the reviews of various brands, it became clear that there is no panacea when it comes to juicers.

There are relatively few parts, and they are easy to assemble and disassemble. The stainless steel basket is really easy to clean and can also be washed in the dishwasher. While working, it does make some noise but not an excessive amount. A careful read of the instruction manual helped me to use it efficiently. Still, when the pulp in the collection basket gets distributed unevenly (think, off-balance spin cycle of a washing machine) it gets very noisy. When this happens, I turn the motor off, unplug, allow the spinning to stop and simply clean out the basket with my hand. Once clear I can resume juicing.

The majority of items I want to juice are solid, mostly carrot, apple, ginger, beet, celery and cucumber. I have read that it is not useful for leafy things like wheatgrass or parsley; I have not tried to juice these.

It is necessary to do some cutting to prepare fruits or vegetables for juicing, but compared with what I had before, very little. I have tried the unit with and without the paper filters. The filters are effective for collecting more of the pulp and making clean up a bit easier. I like the pulp so I will not use them often.

I can imagine after having worked with this for a while now that it will be a constant companion for years to come.

If you choose it, I hope you agree.

4.0 out of 5 stars Acme Juicing..Powerful Juicers, be prepared for clean up!, December 26, 2010
This review is from: Acme 6001 Juicer - Juicerator Household Centrifugal Juicer
Ok, I have to clarify my review in saying that the acme juicer that I am reviewing was made before Waring took over, so I cannot speak for the motor or the filters they now use.

It was my mother's juicer. She got it back in 1969, when Acme actually sold door to door. She had booklets as well as the plastic casing and red pusher (it did not come in stainless steel then). The basket for collecting the pulp was stainless steel as well as the blade construction and the screw that holds it all together.

It still runs to my knowledge. What I can say about the juicers are that:

1. it isn't quiet. It makes a lot of ruccus getting juice out, and the more full the basket becomes, the more strain it puts on the motor and more bouncing around starts to take place (yes they move). My mother used to wrap a towel around the base to keep the sound down as well as keep the machine from traveling across the counter.

2. The pulp gets very, very dry (but dependent on the quality of the carrots as well!)old fruits and veggies, and esp. in drout years tend to be 'woody', and do not flesh out as much juice: they also tend to hold their juice tighter in the fibers, making sloppy pulp.

3. The plastic stains quickly. For as long as I known these juicers and any like them, if you juice (and don't wipe up imeadiately) you will have a stained juicer. Many juicer people 'dedicate' a tupperware pint container or use glass jugs to store the juice, because otherwise the juice will simply stain and flavor your plastics! Also be aware, if you are a carrot juicer person, wipe up imediately any drops on your countertops, any drops on painted surface and if it gets on your clothes, hand scrub in cool water imediately or you will have stained clothes. It just doesn't come out.

4. Dried Pulp on juicer/parts if you leave it is almost impossible to clean up...get it while it is wet. Assume you will spend 30-60 minutes preparing your fruit/veggies, juicing and then clean up. Have your stuff prepared before juicing will save a headache. This juicer has a fairly small hole, so figure any large carrots will need to be cut in half, apples quartered, lemons 3rd and so on.

5. Acme like many other spinning juicers does not accept all fruits and veggies. You should core your fruits before putting them in the juicer. Why? because seeds will be tossed out and shot across the room. Realize that this is with ANY spinning juicer, because the seeds weigh less than the fruit, and it dulls out any blades, not just Acme. The good thing is, Acme blades can be resharpened! So this is not a big thing, just personally I don't care for listing to the ppping and snap when they are shot across the room: this means that concord grapes are not the best idea.

6. It's a workhorse that will only die if you mis treat it. Take care of this juicer and it will take care of you. Realize it is not a vitamix, nor is the pulp re-renderable in my opinion for anything other than compost.

7. Cleaning the basket. This is the biggest chore of all. Realize that the basket gets full after about a 1/2 colander full of carrots,
and will need dumping. It is very dry, and very, very messy. We used to keep a trash can outside the kitchen door just for the juicer, simply because it can fly out as you are using your hand to scoop it out...don't try this with utensils, it just is worse. Scoop with your fingers carefully, it should hold its shape..but doesn't always.
Realize that after you scoop it, you will need to use a brush to clean out all the debris before starting again.

8. The spigget on the juicer is low: you will need a plastic bowl/low measuring cup to catch the juice. Plastic is best, because if the catcher is metal or glass, it will rattle like crazy, and get juice everywhere.

This is it from someone who grew up with this juicer in the house. Also, if it roars low groaning sound, you absolutely MUST turn it off: your basket is overloaded.

Happy Juicing!
