Excellent product., June 19, 2009
This review is from: Acme Metal Siren Whistle
The Acme Siren is a well made product that produces a wide range of sound and is very responsive, when blown gently it produces a low moaning sound, while more vigorous blowing produces the classic sound heard in many cartoons.
It is precision made and the mouth piece unscrews to allow for cleaning and fine adjustment of the bearings on which the rotor runs. (Was the reviewer who made negative comments aware of this I wonder?)
The Acme Siren is no cheap novelty but is a quality item that I am sure will give many years of service and amusement.

This review is from: Acme Metal Siren Whistle
Like most Acme products featured in the Road Runner cartoons, the Acme Siren Whistle is prone to fail at the most inopportune moments.
This is a metal item that easily collects condensed wet breath and saliva, so it will occasionally stick. Experienced whistleblowers know to minimize condensation by keeping it warmed in an armpit before the crucial moment approaches.
And to be fair, as the writer above noted, the Acme Whistle is also designed to be quickly broken down for cleaning and maintenance. Professionals will clean after every use.
When properly primed and maintained, this is indeed a studio quality soundmaker with a sensitivity and range unequaled by cheaper pretenders. Rahsaan Roland Kirk kept one in his arsenal of unusual musical instruments and it can be heard frequently in his live recordings. You may benefit from studying his technique, as the key to the mastery of this instrument is summarized in one word: TIMING. You need to know exactly when to blow down to the nanosecond - and even more important - when NOT to blow it. Used well, this instrument is capable of instilling visceral shock, surprise, glee, laughter, fear, delight and a panoply of other emotions. But overused or misused, it will only induce contempt in your audience.
So, with these caveats I heartily recommend ACME, the trademark of quality!

Defective Product: Not Worth $42.00!, November 3, 2007
This review is from: Acme Metal Siren Whistle
I bought this whistle based on the product description of it being a loud siren noisemaker. Instead, it makes a (passable) wheeeeeeeee! sound as in the old Looney Tunes cartoons when a machine malfunctions. I used this whistle for (at most) seven times, when it stopped working! In another product description on amazon, it states that this item is made with "a watchmaker's precision." The watchmaker must have been asleep at the switch when this one was made. Supposedly, cyclists in England used to blow this whistle in order to clear the road ahead of them. The sound will only produce laughter if you tried it in the U.S.. For forty two dollars, I recommend any other whistle (i.e. the Acme thunderer) besides this one. I sent this whistle back for a replacement; the company refunded my purchase price instead.
