Book Description

Acorna January 8, 2002
"It must be as it was before."

Acorna's people, the Linyaari, are once more without a home. And though they survived the brutal attack from the cold-blooded Khleevi, the battle left their beloved planet, narhii-Vhiliinyar, horribly scarred. Yet all is not lost. While the damage is terrible, hope still lives deep within this gentle, spiritual people. Banding together, they will rebuild both narhii-Vhiliinyar and the original Linyaari homeworld, Vhiliinyar, restoring them to the natural beauty and vitality they enjoyed before the time of the Khleevi.

Acorna, too, is eager to help reconstruct the homeworld of which she's long dreamed. Though she was abandoned in space as a baby, then rescued and raised by gruff human asteroid miners, the beautiful young woman with the "funny" feet and hands and gleaming horn has made peace with her heritage and is now eager to turn her extraordinary healing powers to re-create the Linyaari's world with her lifemate, Aari, her human "uncles," and her friends.

But just as work begins to get under way something goes terribly wrong. Linyaari begin mysteriously disappearing -- including Aari and his sister, Maati. Is it the Khleevi or some other unknown enemy?

Searching for her beloved, Acorna makes an even more astonishing discovery: the remains of a subterranean world that belonged to the legendary Friends -- a technologically advanced society that populated Vhiliinyar before the time of the Ancestors. What happened to the Friends? Where did they go and why has so little remained of their society? Acorna knows that to save Aari and the rest of the missing Linyaari she must begin to seek the answers -- a quest that will once again take her deep into the realms of limitless space to find the origins of her people...

In Acona's Search, the acclaimed Anne McCaffrey and award-winning author Elizabeth Ann Scarborough create another enthralling adventure featuring one of the most endearing and adventurous heroines in speculative fiction: the beloved Unicorn Girl. Filled with wonder, danger, wisdom, and love, it is a tale to treasure and share.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Homecoming for Acorna of the Linyaari turns out to be not only bittersweet (because of the damage sustained to the planet during its occupation by the Khleevi) but treacherous in this fanciful continuation of the Adventures of the Unicorn Girl (Acorna; Acorna's Quest; etc.) from fantasy titans McCaffrey (The Dragonriders of Pern) and Scarborough (The Healer's War). Acorna finds out that there's much more to her world than she or anyone else had imagined. It all starts when the teams who are helping to survey the planet for terraforming start to disappear, one by one. At first, Acorna is only a little worried about the disappearances of her friends and co-workers, but when her life-mate Aari goes missing, Acorna will move heaven and earth to bring him back. Mac (an android who wishes he were a Linyaari, even to the point of fashioning himself a horn), a cat named Roadkill and a youngish Linyaari named Thariinye all help Acorna in her search. Acorna and her hastily gathered team race against time (literally) and space to find their missing crewmates, pitting their wits against a world that has been decimated by warfare and a lack of information of any kind and transformed by technology that's more advanced than any they have seen before. As a book in a continuing series, this title will be better understood by those who've read the previous five volumes. There's enough story line to keep readers going, however, even when they encounter unfamiliar plot points from previous novels. This is a light, fluffy, fun read, perfectly complemented by the jacket art showing a beautiful blonde with a little horn stuck on her forehead.

From Library Journal

After the departure of the hostile Khleevi from the Linyaari home-world, Acorna and her psychically gifted, unicorn-horned people attempt to salvage their devastated planet. A series of mysterious disappearances propels Acorna and her companions on a desperate search that leads to the discovery of a secret at the heart of their world. The latest installment in the Acorna series delves into the ancient past of the Linyaari, opening new avenues for further novels. Coauthors McCaffrey and Scarborough exercise their storytelling skills to create an engaging tale that belongs in libraries where the series is popular.

5.0 out of 5 stars Acorna, still searching..., January 27, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Acorna's Search (Hardcover)
Like the earlier Acorna novels, nothing goes as planned for Acorna. The development of the characters wasn't as in depth as the earlier novels. But with very few new characters added this is not a hinderance. Acorna's uncle seemed a lot more miserly than I remembered. He was always profit motivated, but, was still generous.

The descriptions of the planet made the story come alive. You could feel the how they felt. The description of the desolate surface play well into the feeling of desparation and despair.

It was very enjoyable and a fast read. I found myself disappointed when I reached the end... I can hardly wait for the next installment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fifth book in Acorna Series, June 27, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Acorna's Search (Hardcover)
The first book I read in the series was actually the second so I had to go buy the first. After reading the third and fourth it is starting to get slow. I was excited at seeing this book was out but disappointed that everything isn't finished up yet. I did read it in a day so its a good read. Now I can't wait for the next installment.
