Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K—A mischievous squirrel gathers acorns, sometimes stealing them from other forest creatures, and buries them in various spots. After a scary encounter with a bear, who only wants some berries growing nearby, the squirrel can't seem to recall where he put his supply. When the squirrel's tummy starts to grumble, berries plundered from some indignant rats provide a welcome snack. The rats get their due on the back endpapers when they pinch the squirrel's acorns from their hiding places. Like the rats, young children will enjoy getting one over on the cheeky squirrel. Oversize cut-paper and ink cartoons, interspersed with photographic images of acorns and berries, tell much of the story, making the one-word to one-sentence lines of text per spread almost unnecessary. While the book is not as original as Sherry's I'm the Biggest Thing in the Ocean (2007) and I'm the Best Artist in the Ocean (2008, both Dial), this bright orange squirrel will entertain children.—Rachel G. Payne, Brooklyn Public Library, NY END

My son just won't let me put this book down - he insists I read it over and over again. I think it's the one book that makes perfect sense to him.

5.0 out of 5 stars This little wide-eyed squirrel and his antics will appeal to the very young child! BONK! "Gather! Dig! Bury!", December 15, 2009
This review is from: Acorns Everywhere (Hardcover)
An acorn fell out of the sky and an acorn BONK came down on a squirrel's head. The acorns were all over the place. A mouse was busy picking one up and a blue bird sitting in an oak tree had one in his beak. The wide-eyed orange squirrel gathered several in his arms and said to himself, "I must hide them." He got right to work gathering more acorns and even took one right out of the mouse's mouth. Not nice! He frantically dug holes all over the place and buried his acorns.

Hiding behind the oak tree was a bear. Wonder what he wants? He went up in the tree and was so intent on gathering all he could he took an acorn out of the blue bird's beak, but didn't get the cap. "Gather! Dig! Bury!" He was pushing more into a hole when all of a sudden he could see some big bear toes. The bear reached toward the frightened orange squirrel. Was he going to gather him up and bury him?

This little wide-eyed squirrel and his antics will appeal to the very young child. There are few words, but the simple sentence, "gather, dig, bury" will give little ones the giggles by the time they get to the end of the book. The silly squirrel is so busy gathering up his acorns he totally ignores all the other creatures. Sharing just isn't his thing and ten to one, the little one who would enjoy this book hasn't thought much about it either!
