More About the Author

Hi, I am Dr. Lanny J. Acosta Sr.
I was born in the Spanish Village of Bencheque, now named Reggio, in the bayou country of Southeastern Louisiana. The little fishing and trapping village was completely destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. My father was brilliant in mathematics despite only having a 6th grade education. My mother had a photographic memory and an enormous vocabulary. Both parents spoke fluent Spanish and learned English in school.
My first work was in the aerospace industry and I was fortunate to work on the Saturn project which put us on the moon first.
After 6 years working as an engineer in aerospace, I became a teacher, principal and school superintendent. I taught Chemistry and Physics every year even when I was a principal.
My doctoral research was on ACT preparation and I have been teaching ACT prep since about 1980. My goal is to help get Mississippi off the bottom of ACT scores nationally. I love teaching my students who I call by pet names,"ragamuffins", Pasquale, and "Boogalies". I teach with passion and my writings reflect that passion as I use "unconventional simple explanations" for the complex ideas tested on the ACT. My next ebook will be my "Acosta Guided Tour to ACT Success" which is the basis of my complete online video course that you can find at www.actpreponline.com.
I created all the reading passages and science readings from my past knowledge and experiences in a fashion that teaches more than it tests students. My Mathematics problems use the names and nick names of my friends and relatives from my days on the bayou.
Read the book when it comes out and you will understand how colorful my youth was on the Bayou Terre Bouf.
Enjoy learning but work hard at it. As I always tell my students, learning ought to be fun, but it is not, it is hard work and misery. Only with hard work and effort can anyone learn. The joy is in the accomplishment not the activity. I believe that the idea from our educational theorists that "learning should be fun" is a big reason that our educational institutions of today are miserably failing our youngsters.
