Willis Earl Beal - 'Evening's Kiss'

Biography

"I want to be a shadow, not the man casting it."

It's a strange comment given the life Willis Earl Beal has lived since the release of his debut album, Acousmatic Sorcery, last year. He's traveled the world, performed to thousands of fans on stages and televisions shows and sat through countless interviews with major publications. It would appear that Beal's light ... Editorial Reviews

XL Recordings release Willis Earl Beal's debut album Acousmatic Sorcery. The self taught Chicago based musican sings warm, visceral and moving tunes. The album's 11 songs are taken from a series of recordings Beal made while living in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful By Charlie Quaker on May 24, 2012
Format: Audio CD
Debut from eccentric Chicago artist--Raw, folk/gospel/blues/hip-hop experiments nestled in a
warm & genuine acoustic lo-fi style with a primeval percussive backbeat urgency, and built on
what sounds like a stack of homemade or toy or at least well-worn instruments. The voice---all
naked, exposed and full of gutsy, if downtrodden, life energy---reeks of "sittin' in a chair and so
here I am" authenticity, as it moves from a gritty growl to tender concern. The lyrics move from
stream-of-consciousness life examination poetry to perceptive, if sometimes vague, comments
on cultural existentialism. W.E.B. is as close to a modern day minstrel as it gets. Sometimes
recalls Tom Waits, Dave Van Ronk, Daniel Johnston, Gonjasufi, Bon Iver, Nick Drake, Jandek.
Unique & affective.

His music is very raw, kinda reminds me of Tom Waits, in a good way. His next album will be even better, I'm absolutely convinced.
