"This well-thought-out textbook has proved to be invaluable for students who want to know more than the basic elements of acoustic phonetics. The spectrograms provide a good view of a wide range of sounds, and the material on perception and hearing is particularly insightful. Keith Johnson is a leading figure in the field of perceptual phonetics and shows students how good experiments should be done." Peter Ladefoged, University of California, Los Angeles
"The best phonetics textbook I've ever used. Uniquely successful in revealing to beginners the line of reasoning in acoustic modelling." Janet Pierrehumbert, Northwestern University
"An excellent phonetics text for students of linguistic phonetics and speech science. Students encounter clear explanations of the basics of acoustics, digital signal processing, the acoustic theory of speech production, and the accounts it offers for the acoustic properties of basic speech sound types. Professional speech scientists may learn from it too; I did." Carol A. Fowler, Haskins Laboratories --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Excellent Introductory Text to Acoustic & Auditory Phonetics,
By A Customer
This review is from: Acoustic and Auditory Phonetics (1st Edition) (Paperback)
Johnson's text fills a lacuna in Phonetics primers by introducing the fundamentals of acoustics in terms that students new to phonetics can grasp.Johnson intersperses fairly complex issues with practical applications of the concepts making the text approachable. These practical applications often can be translated into classroom exercises and are occasionally humorous. I found the explanation of waves, harmonics, and formants particularly clear and helpful. The segue from acoustics to auditory phonetics is seamless. Adding this text to the reading list of my intro to phonetics class (undergrad) reaped pleasant rewards. This text is appropriate for undergraduate or graduate students with limited exposure to acoustic and auditory phonetics, but is useful for even seasoned phoneticians.

Excellent Introduction to the Subject!!!!,

This review is from: Acoustic and Auditory Phonetics (1st Edition) (Paperback)
This has to be one of the best texts on phonetics I've ever encountered. Dr. Johnson takes some very difficult concepts in accoustic theory and makes them accessible to the beginning student.

Excellent Introduction to Phonetics,
This review is from: Acoustic and Auditory Phonetics (Paperback)
This book provides an easy to follow yet scholarly and solid approach in acoustic Phonetics. In contrast with other Phonetics books, this book does not assume that the reader is Linguistics students; it will probably appeal to you if you are one though. Having received no prior formal education in the fields of Phonetics or Phonology, it helped me build a good (initial) understanding of notions around the topic and feel comfortable when approaching more phonologically orientated texts. A final point I liked was the fact that paradigms are coming from a variety of world's languages.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to explore Phonetics and/or is in need of a good up-to-date reference and overview of the area.
