4.0 out of 5 stars Keaggy at his best, January 9, 2008
By
This review is from: Acoustic Cafe (Audio CD)
I've been listening to Phil Keaggy for over 30 years as a contemporary Christian artist. Being a Beatle fan, I've always seen their influence in Keaggy's music. With his McCartneyesque singing style, he was a natural for this type of CD, covering some of the Beatle classics included here. My favorite track is 'God Only Knows' where he put his own style (not a bad thing) into the Beach Boys classic. As usual, all his guitar playing is top shelf! The non-Keaggy vocals are good, but I would have rather had him singing lead on all the tracks.

This is a good listening album. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprised By How Much I Like It, December 3, 2007
This review is from: Acoustic Cafe (Audio CD)
This has become one of my favorite cds of the moment. Phil Keaggy and his friends (but most Phil) perform some of his favorite soft pop hits of the modern era unplugged. The vocal harmonies on the Beatles' songs "In My Life" and "Here, There and Everywhere are gorgeous. The first song also has a nifty guitar solo, one of Phil's best on cd.

He has his daughter Alicia Keaggy singing Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," and he also has wonderful versions of "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys and a spot on cover of the Everly Brothers' "All I Have to Do is Dream."

There are also two Bob Dylan covers "If Not For You" and "To Make You Feel My Love."

If there any complaints from Philphiles, they would probably wish that there were more extended acoustic guitar solos (The one on "In My Life" is just exquisite!) and they might wish that Phil would not have made these songs sound so much like the originals, perhaps show some more creativity with the arrangements.

In reply to complaint number one, I would say purchase the cds "Two of Us" (acoustic music with Mike Pachelli) or "The Song Within" (instrumental acoustic). In reply to complaint number two, the songs are performed so lovingly and carefully that I don't think the creativity issue comes into play.

I think that the CD is great. I play it all the time while reading a book and drinking my java. It is perfect for listening to on an iPod while doing schoolwork or just relaxing. One of my favorite Phil recordings! I'm looking forward to the next installment in this series of coffee house covers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just beautiful! Brings back memories..., April 3, 2008
This review is from: Acoustic Cafe (Audio CD)
Phil's put together a collection of a lot of songs that were basically the soundtrack of my ol' school days, so listening to this album is memory time for me! It's great to hear him pay homage to these classic songs. Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars Keaggy Plays Classic Pop Love Songs, November 20, 2007

This review is from: Acoustic Cafe (Audio CD)
Phil Keaggy's roots in 60s pop/rock are hardly a well-kept secret, but here we have a real treat - Phil (along with a few friends and family members) playing a delightful collection culled from the Beatles, Bob Dylan, the Beach Boys, James Taylor, the Everly Brothers, even Billy Joel and Cyndi Lauper.

In one form or another, all of these tunes are beautiful love songs, and it's not hard to imagine Phil sitting in a chair, singing them to his wife Bernadette. As I listened, I couldn't help musing on my own dear wife, and how much I love her - 'Something In the Way She Moves', indeed. . .

Thanks, Phil. . .

This CD brings a nostalgic contentment with fine guitar playing and good vocals. For those who have not "met" Phil Keaggy, this is just a sample of the variety this guitar master can bring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Album from Start to Finish, September 18, 2009
This review is from: Acoustic Café (MP3 Download)
I am well known to enjoy almost everything that Phil creates, but this album strikes a different and wonderful chord in my library. Every song is so well done and pleasant to listen too. I was playing it recently and asked if it was The Beatles, which made me chuckle. I know they've been played more recently, but it was fun to explain who it was to this nice 20 something person. Thank you, Phil, for another great album.

5.0 out of 5 stars SIMPLY WONDERFUL, August 4, 2007

This is "secular" Phil Keaggy -- at his relaxed best, with friends, singing just plain great music. A terrific album to have playing while you spend time with those you love.

Phil drips with his talent in this album. He conveys over a matchless style with grace unbounded. His art form also allows for others to play with him with comfort. There is even a tabla player on this album which fits very nicely into this mix- :). I would rate this higher if Amazon would let me!
