Great way to learn new songs!, March 22, 2008
This review is from: Acoustic Favorites Guitar Play-Along BK/CD Vol.69 (Hal Leonard Guitar Play-Along) (Paperback)
"Acoustic Favourites," just like the rest of the Guitar Play Along series by Hal Leonard, is a great way to learn new songs. I have purchased several books in the series and enjoy them all. The songs in this partiular book vary in complexity enough that most any player could find a couple of songs to work on. The included software to slow down the song is an excellent way to work on the hard parts. I have noticed that some of the books came with a version that did not loop and others have the loop function. I did not happen to use the copy from this book, so I don't know which version it is. Either one is good, but being able to loop the section you are working on is a really nice feature. The software vendor sells a "full version" of the slow-down software that includes looping as well as the ability to work with any cd or MP3. (The version that comes with the book only works with the Hal Leonard Play-Along series of books.) I will be buying the full version.
The transcriptions in this series seem to be fairly accurate, though not 100% accurate. They are close enough for me and I just change it where I think it is not exactly correct. These are not "dummied down" versions but are fairly accurate transcriptions of the original recordings. The cd has two versions of each song, one with the guitar part played for you to listen to and one without the guitar part that you can play along with. I find that I like to play along with the full version for a while, doubling the guitar part. It just works for me. THEN once I have the song at least partially learned, I switch to the version without the guitar part and start really learning the part. Bottom line... it is a very cool, progressive way to learn songs.
The transcriptions, play-along tracks on the cd, and the slow-down software included are ALL excellent products. They are partiularly well suited for guitarists (such as myself) that do not currently play in a band. You get to play along to a full band backing (instead of just a metronome) and your drummer never shows up late! :-)
This whole series of books are great. Try a couple...
