Book Description

October 1980

A good guitar repairman is hard to find, and when found, a long waiting list seems inevitable. Those who have confronted this problem may now turn to Don E. Teeter’s encyclopedic treatment of guitar adjustment, maintenance, and repair. Profusely illustrated with line drawings and photographs and written in a clear and straightforward style, this book takes the reader on a guided tour of the acoustic guitar’s various parts and their functions. Teeter provides detailed instructions for disassembling and assembling guitars, describes the tools and materials used in their repair, and gives step-by-step procedures for major and minor repairs, inlay work, and refinishing.

The book is not just for the experts in guitar repair. As Teeter notes, "Quite a few of the techniques listed in this manual, such as adjusting tension rods, adjusting string heights (action), repairing minor cracks, setting movable bridges for proper intonation (note accuracy), dressing and polishing frets, gluing loose bridges, changing machine heads and of course, the proper care and maintenance of the instruments, are within the capabilities of the average amateur with limited tools."

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff, December 1, 2007
This book (and its companion volume II) is outstanding. The author has a no-nonsense style of writing that is entertaining, concise, and extremely useful. He explains what works, what doesn't, and why. Very good information on making your own tools and on how to do a better job with less work. His motivation is to share information, not to sell product. I have other books on the subject which are good and very useful, these two volumes are far and away the best.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for Major Repairs, September 29, 2011
This dated guidebook is well suited to someone with a home woodworking shop loaded with clamps and vises, and would like to tackle major guitar repairs, such a fixing a broken neck.

But my ambitions were more modest: I wanted to diagnose and fix a buzzing fret, and to lower the action by deepening the nut slots and sanding down the bridge. These adjustments, although minor, are important, and can be screwed up if not done right.

Unfortunately, this book was not much help to me. However, fret not (pun intended), Dan Erlewine's books and the Internet have come to my rescue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Repair Reference!, June 25, 2011
What can one say about Don Teeter. Don's experience really shines through in this book.
If you are looking for an excellent acoustic guitar repair manual then this is a great choice.
The writing and examples are very clear and easy to follow. I have a number of other repair books
that seem outdated on some items. But Don Teeter's book is a timeless collection of repair how-tos
and jig making to make things easier.
I believe you will find this book invaluable.
