Acoustic Guitar contributing editor DAVID HAMBURGER is the author of more than a dozen books, including Acoustic Guitar Slide Basics, the Acoustic Guitar Method, Early Jazz and Swing Songs for Guitar, and The Acoustic Guitar Fingerstyle Method. Hamburger recently produced Austin, Texas, songwriter Michael Fracasso’s new CD, Red Dog Blues, scored the Kestrel Filmworks documentary Wildcatting for Wind, and fathered an heir named Milo, all without his head exploding—yet. Hamburger has been playing folk and blues music since first picking up the guitar at the age of 12 and has been on the faculty of the National Guitar Workshop since 1988. His guitar, slide guitar, and Dobro playing can be heard on his solo albums King of the Brooklyn Delta (Chester, 1994) and Indigo Rose (Chester, 1999), as well as numerous independent recordings.

As a beginning guitarist with essentially no formal background in music, I find myself frequently at a loss to understand the structure of the music that I'm playing (why is this an A chord and why is that a D?). This book is absolutely outstanding in explaining the nomenclature and structure of chords, even to a relative novice. A couple of hours perusing this and I've developed a MUCH greater understanding of chords and how they are related, how they differ as you move up the fretboard, etc. If you're trying to learn how to PLAY guitar, this book isn't going to be useful, but if you're trying to UNDERSTAND what you're playing and don't already have a musical background, this book is absolutely great!

This book is a fine chord reference book. It does not just throw a flurry of different chords at the reader. The book starts off with a lucid introduction to the theory behind chords played on the guitar. If you are looking for a basic chord reference book, this is a real good one. A novice or untrained guitarist will benefit greatly, gaining a solid understanding of chord concepts. I highly recommend this book.

This book has a great chord's chart section. I am just starting outand some of the chord's are very hard to fret, but this chord charts are showing some variations that I hadn't seen. Good book.
