5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent utility, but average quality sound.
This mic does a great job of what it does, filtering out unwanted noise. I sit in a room with four computers and a TV, and this thing zeroes in on my voice perfectly, disgarding the sound of the computer fans and even ignores the sound from the TV. One of the first things my friend noticed when I was using Skype with this was the background hiss from my old microphone...

1.0 out of 5 stars Digital Noise Reduction Causes "Babbling Brook" Effect
I suspended this microphone from a high classroom ceiling where there was low-level noise coming from above the ceiling tiles from an energy return unit. I mounted the microphone so that it would point downward toward students sitting in seats and I hoped it would pick them up. It did. Unfortunately, the digital noise reduction built-in to this unit attempted to filter...

This mic does a great job of what it does, filtering out unwanted noise. I sit in a room with four computers and a TV, and this thing zeroes in on my voice perfectly, disgarding the sound of the computer fans and even ignores the sound from the TV. One of the first things my friend noticed when I was using Skype with this was the background hiss from my old microphone was gone. He often asked me "Are you still there?" because he couldn't tell if my mic was working or not.

That said, the quality of the microphones used are still not superb. The sound quality is much better than most mics due to the noise filtering capabilities, especially against other on-the-desk type mics, but an array of cheap microphones is still just a bunch of cheap microphones. It is obvious when you hear your voice in sound recorder. Don't go buying this expecting something that sounds like studio quality. It's utility comes from it's power to single in on a speaker in noisy environments.

It's a good tool for:
1) Environments where a headset mic is impractical, or perhaps found uncomfortable.
2) Where multiple speakers, speaking one at a time, are common, such as conferences.
3) Many kinds of voice recognition situations. The microphone produces a good consistant quality which is good for such an application.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tegrity room mic., May 17, 2010

We are using the Acoustic Magic Voice Tracker in recording audio during our Chat & Chow sessions on campus using the Tegrity A/V capture software. This captures our audio not only from our session speakers but it also tracks and picks up audio from guest questions and discussions. This is a great microphone for speakers that move around and questions that come from various audience members around the room.

This product blows my mind. It's literally the best thing for a home automation microphone, as you can be pretty much anywhere in the room for it to work.

I suspended this microphone from a high classroom ceiling where there was low-level noise coming from above the ceiling tiles from an energy return unit. I mounted the microphone so that it would point downward toward students sitting in seats and I hoped it would pick them up. It did. Unfortunately, the digital noise reduction built-in to this unit attempted to filter out the noise from above and, consequently, there was a "babbling brook" effect. I had to return it. It's too bad as there is a massive need for this type of microphone in classrooms, but the "babbling brook" effect renders this one less-than-effective in my classroom.
