5.0 out of 5 stars Great speakers, January 4, 2008
This review is from: 5 1/4" Wireless Stereo Speakers
Prior to buying these amazing speakers on Dec 17,'07 I searched many online sites for the best deal and read as many performance reviews as poss. regarding performance. The best deal was at Newegg but, they were out of stock. The second best was Amazon,... of course! Back then there were many reviews regarding the AR-871 speakers. However, as of this review, 1/4/'08, I see where this is the first. Many of the reviews were negative complaining about difficulty tuning, searching for the transmitter. I suffered no such problems. Right out of the box they searched and found the signal likkity-split. Perhaps the complainers were trying to go thru 12" steel reinforced concrete walls which any radio signal would have difficutly penetrating, I don't know. I tested the speaker's range within my house and found them to work perfectly in any room on any of the 3 floors of my 10,000 sq.ft. house.
Additionally, the speakers work great out of doors even to the farthest reaches of my property and beyond. Really great if I want to listen to MY music while visiting a neighbor. HA! I find the listed range of 300' to be more than that. Many complained about the lack of a remote on/off and volume control. For those features you must spend more than 132 bucks.
There were positive reviews which dispelled the all of the negative complaints. I add my critique to those who enjoy the AR 871 speakers.
A major selling point for me was the added benefit of using 'C' batteries to power the speakers without being tied to an electrical source when electrical outlets aren't available. ie: outdoors.
Each speaker requires 8 batteries which can get expensive in the long run however, if you are willing to pay a little extra up front for rechargable
batteries you will be rewarded by the AR 871s ability to recharge those batteries within the speakers themselves. No need to buy additional and expensive battery chargers.I caution you to buy NI-MH batteries as opposed to NI-NC batteries. Nickel Cadmium batteries tend to have a 'memory' regarding charging cycles. If you recharge a Nicad battery before it is completely discharged it will remember that point at which it is recharged and fail at that point every time if a COMPLETE discharge of the battery is not performed before recharging. Metal Hydride batteries are not affected by mid-cycle recharging. Do your homework before buying rechargable batteries and save yourself some grief and $$$.
Last but not least the transmitter of the AR871 will accept your i-Pod and MP3 player so you can listen to your favorite tunes without having to play your stereo, tapes, or ???
I've recorded my musical library of 40 years worth of music from 78 rpm records, 33s, 45s, reel to reel tapes, cassettes, cartridges and CDs onto my computer. I now have the ability to listen to any song or album I want with just a click of the mouse and enjoy that music anywhere in my home or outdoors. BUY the AR871. You WON'T be disappointed.
