Island Style from the album Acoustic Soul

From the time he was a young boy growing up in Palolo Valley on Oahu, John Cruz knew he was destined to play music. Whether inside or outside the home, his earliest memories were filled with song. His Hawaiian grandmother had a beautiful voice and sang in church. His mom loved the Motown sound and had an extensive record collection. His dad played country music and taught John to perform ... About the Artist

1997 Na Hoku Hanohano Award Winner - Most Promising Artist

Product Description

Selling over 100,000 copies of the initial release, John Cruz - Acoustic Soul is now being re-issued by Quiet Storm Records. The album has been digitally re-mastered and the artwork has also been redesigned, making this familiar local favorite... Unique! From the liner notes: Island Style - The first verse and chorus were written in the winter of ‘94 while I was living in New York City. I was feeling homesick and missing my family, especially my Mom’s cooking. When I returned to the islands I wrote the Grandma verse and the slack key guitar part. Each track is introduced by John, in his own words, in a similar manner, within the full four-panel, redesigned liner notes. Already a proven winner... yet New & Improved!

5.0 out of 5 stars Soul Hawaiian style May 14, 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I am still waiting for John Cruz to come out with another album! That is how good this one is. If you like old Taj Mahal and modern Hawaiian music you will love this recording. The album has a laid back style indicative of Hawaii and gives a flavor of the local culture in " Island style". He also lends a spiritual tone with songs like " Shine on" and "Sitting in Limbo". An excellent album and highly recommended listening

5.0 out of 5 stars Not typical Hawaiin June 7, 2001
Format:Audio CD
I was riding in a friends car here in Hawaii, and was drawn to the music, not typical hawaiin tuff, sort of Hawaiin meets Willie Nelson, John Hiatt and Jimmy Buffett. The CD is excellent. The hard Hawaiin music gets old, but Cruz has been playing all over America and this CD shows all of his experience. I loved Mama's Lil' Baby. Mellow but fun...give this one a try.

Acoustic Soul from John Cruz is an amazing collection of original work and remakes - all with island style in mind. I never get tired of listening to it! "Shine On" is one of the most beautiful songs on the planet! Can't wait until a new John Cruz album comes out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly soulful January 15, 2005
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is just a fabulous album. A cool eclectic mix that is unique. Cool, smooth jazz. Tender tunes. Soul tunes and the greatest unique treasures to me are, in fact, the hawaiian tunes.

5.0 out of 5 stars My all time favorite CD December 7, 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This CD is a great choice if you are in the mood for a mellow evening or a romantic dinner. His music brings back memories of quiet evenings on the beach. We played his song "Shine On" for our first dance at our wedding, and it was a hit. (...)However, it is in current press in Hawaii, so if you are diligent you should be able to find it anyway. If you are a fan of IZ or pop-folk, you will love this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars fabulous sound January 11, 2008
Format:Audio CD
This is one my husband's and my favorite CDs. John Cruz has a mellow, but fabulous island sound. I would further describe his music as being relaxing, but not bland. His voice is smooth, the melodies are memorable, and the overall effect is magical. We listen to this CD all the time.

I heartily recommend this product!
