Book Description

A humorous yet serious guide to Organic Gardening and country living. Located in the Pacific Northwest, the organic gardening guidelines and country living anecdotes apply to any part of the country. Written by Award Winning Organic Gardening and Country Living Columnist Ed Back, who uses several farm animals, especially the talking geese Tom and Barbara to help tell the stories of life in the country while providing the reader with a wealth of information on the crafts and skills of gardening, with emohasis on organic gardening.
The reader will find answers to dozens of questions about this exploding "green" hobby, from how to make compost, to making manure tea to herbal tea.
The talking geese, Tom and Barbara, will help the reader understand how best to deal with pests such as blackberry vines, slugs, moles and even the next door neighbor's dogs. The book is the culmination of years of Award Winning columns with the same title as the book.
The story is told in over 200 pages with more than 80 photos in brilliant color.
Author's Note: Areading device with a color display, such as a personal computer, is necessary to view the photos in color. Otherwise, they are still visible, but only in black and white.

About the Author

I am an over the 65 hill senior who has spent the better part of the last forty years indulging in my favorite hobby of gardening. I prefer vegetable gardening to flowers, trees, and shrubs, because I was never very good at Latin. I am a die-hard organic gardener in the true sense of the word. That is, I learned early on that there was truth in the organic gardener's mantra that says, feed the soil and not the plants, and I am convinced that I can feed my garden soil everything it needs without having to resort to chemically formulated artificial nutrients, and I know what a soil dependent on drugs looks like as opposed to a healthy, organically fed soil. I have been writing about organic gardening for over 20 years, mostly in the form of an award winning newspaper column as well as various magazine articles. From the Back Acres: A Humorous Guide to Organic Gardening is my first book, which I am happy to say has been a wonderful success for me. It is available on Amazon.com as a digital book, readable on Kindles, PCs, and other data file readers, as well as the volume presented here. I am currently working on the second edition of the book which, based upon how long it took me to write the first edition, should be available around the year 2050, the Mayan Calendar notwithstanding. Happy Reading and Happy Gardening!

2.0 out of 5 stars Watch out for the 5-star shill reviews March 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Wow, the other reviews really demonstrate why you have to be very careful in relying on the rating system. All the 5-star reviews make you think this is a great book, right? But most of them are pretty clearly shills as this book is the ONLY one reviewed by each account, except for a reviewer who has the same last name as the author - coincidence? "Sandra" is pretty clearly either a Back or a friend - possibly the "Sandi" in the book - as her review plainly states "after all, I lived it."

So if you want a review that's not from a family member or shill, read on. I picked up this book free through the Kindle Owners' Lending Library, which is why it will not show as an Amazon Verified Purchase.

Intended to be a humorous book of gardening advice. Several chapters from this book have been excerpted to sell separately by the author, including Let's Talk Veggies : A Small Garden Handbook (chapter 11).

The "humor" part is the commentary allegedly written by Tom and Barbara, the geese. I find that type of attribution uninteresting-corny so I would not describe the book as humorous. The spelling is erratic; not even the gardening terms are reliably correct. As an example, he praises "secession planting." That's right, according to Back, the Civil War was a type of gardening. Personally, I prefer "succession planting" in my garden. The Kindle formatting is awful beyond description. The type size changes at random. Some photos were apparently laid out two-across, but there is not room for two of them on my Kindle Keyboard, so the photos appear one at a time and then I see the two captions with intermingled words so I can't even tell which words belonged with which photo.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gardener's "misadventures" February 4, 2013
By HilDan
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a book to sit back, relax, and just enjoy. Along the way, you will find a lot of good, practical advice hidden in its pages. The writing is so entertaining that even non-gardeners might enjoy it. If your goal is to get quick (emphasis on quick) gardening hints and tips, this book is probably not for you. As for me, I am thoroughly enjoying this and am getting quite a few chuckles out of it.

By the way, I am neither family nor friend to the author nor a shill reviewer like one reviewer suggests if you give this book 5 stars. Just my honest opinion. True, the photo captions are jumbled up in the Kindle version, but I really don't want to degrade the book for something that minor.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting story about homesteading March 8, 2013

I thought this was an amusing look at life on a homestead. The talking ducks where a bit much, but overall I enjoyed it.

After over 20 yrs as an Active Duty family we bought our own "Little House on the Prairie" farm. I could relate to so many of the things he wrote about, and picked up a few tips as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Green Acres February 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have not read all of the book yet but I have enjoyed what I have read. My husband and I also left our home in the city and moved to 13 acres and a mobe. We are retired and do not plan to build a dream home but we are remodeling our mobe. We have chickens, goats, rabbits, guineas, dogs and a cat. Your book is sooo funny.
