1.0 out of 5 stars Product is Ok - Support is awful February 21, 2012
I stated using Acronis well over a year ago now with fairly good results, but sadly the events of the last week or two have given me cause to leave an unfavorable review. Initially, the product seemed to do the job, although admittedly, I was never 100% successful at getting some of the features, like the non-stop backup, to work. Never the less, when I manually ran my backups, they worked and I liked being able to browse the backup sets to pluck out individual files.

I recently upgraded to the 2012 version with PlusPack. A few weeks after I installed, the product stopped working. The Acronis services are still running background, but the user interface won't start and therefore you can't do anything with the product. I tried all the usual stuff, uninstall / reinstall, researched the problem via Google and Acronis's knowledge base, but have not found anything relevant to my issue. I finally broke down and went to contact support only to find that support is only good for 30 days (my product actually failed within that window, but I hadn't had time to troubleshoot the issue until a few weeks later). What I found is that past the 30 day window, you have to pay *$10 PER INCIDENT* which is ridiculous. I emailed customer support to complain about this since my product failed in the window and have received no response after several days.

Needless to say, I am very disappointed with Acronis. I would understand lack of support for a product that I have owned for years, but since I just upgraded and it is the new product that has failed, it should be covered (and for more than 30 days). But, to not even contact me after only being 2 weeks out of a VERY short support window is poor form. Further, to charge a a support fee equivalent to 25-50% of my purchase price adds insult to injury. I will find a different company that actually stands behind their product and users. I suggest you do the same.

1.0 out of 5 stars DON'T DO IT, YOU'LL BE SORRY! April 6, 2012
I've got 25+ years in the industry as a software developer. I purchased this thinking I could create and hold a system image just in case of a disaster. Well I had a disaster and needed to replace the "clean" image I thought my Acronis tool had saved for me.

Guess what? I had the image, Acronis booted my system, I followed the prompts and to my profound shock and amazement Acronis would not allow a direct replacement of my boot partition. It would allow me to replace another partition but that meant over-writing and destroying all my data!

That's right a complete and utter waste! What is the point of making a safety backup image of your boot partition along with all your installed applications if you can't restore it? Complete waste of time and money, these people should be shut-down!

I've spent nearly 9 hours restoring my applications and installing software updates because this tool which was sold as an image backup tool didn't work!

Looks pretty, but I'd take function over BS UIs any day of the week!

1.0 out of 5 stars Garbage in a Box August 13, 2012
I wanted to replace my laptop's hard disk with a solid state disk. The task seemed simple enough: all I had to do was clone the existing hard disk to a bright, shiny new solid state disk, then remove and replace the hard drive. Imagine my delight when I read such a program existed and was designed to do--among other things--exactly what I wanted. Problem is, it didn't work. Not only didn't it work, but after 8 hours (4 of them working with Acronis' crack team of so-called experts online in India), and 4 failed attempts at running the software, I now have two disk drives that don't work properly and won't boot normally to Windows.

Without mincing words, this program is CRAP.

FYI, the geniuses at Acronis know this is a problem. In fact, they have a procedure setup because they know this software doesn't work for laptops. In short, they have you create an "Acronis Bootable Media" DVD, power down the computer, place the new disk drive in the machine, boot the computer (using the bootable disk you have to produce), and then follow the not-so-user-friendly prompts onscreen to clone your disk. But hey, guess what? That doesn't work, either.

Software should work out of the box and shouldn't require users to have a PhD in computers to make it work properly. Unless you're a world-class masochist or are trying to see how high you can get your blood pressure without killing yourself, STAY AWAY FROM THIS SOFTWARE--it doesn't work if you want to clone a disk.

AFter using Acronis for about 5 weeks, I suddenly got an error message in the middle of a busy day on my computer monitor: "disk drive full". I thought "What? I have plenty of storage space left." But when I checked my directory list of folders and ACRONIS had been automatically backing up my programs on a DAILY BASIS!!! I actually had 4 DUPLICATE back-up programs that were eating up 37 GB each! (For several days, I kept seeing annoying pop-up windows from ACronis trying to goad me into buying their "Online Backup Service". I deleted them everytime.)

I didn't why my computer had been saboutaged so I deleted those extra back-up files and moved on. Four days later, the SAME ERROR popped up again: "disk drive full". I checked and sure enough, ACRONIS had AGAIN, hijacked my computer WITHOUT MY PERMISSION to start making daily back-ups! I NEVER, EVER selected any options for after market "upgrades" nor "Subscription services", so I was furious. I went online to the Acronis website and like many companies these days, they won't publish a phone number or direct email. I tried their forum and other customers were complaining about the exact same thing as me. BUT ACRONIS REFUSES TO HELP ANYONE!!! I finally went through about 10 minutes of total B_llsh_t in order to get one of their email forms to assume I was writing about a sales issue. Two days later they wrote me back an email and said my 30 day tech support had expired (yah...like 2 weeks before). BUT THEY ARE THE INTRUDERS THAT HIJACKED MY COMPUTER IN THE FIRST PLACE!!?? WTF????

I hate sneaky companies that bully their way into your private computer activity, then they EXTORT YOU BY DEMANDING YOU PAY THEM TO HELP YOU TROUBLE SHOOT AND FIX IT!! There is a special place in hell for these type of demons!
