Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-7-Valley of the Kings provides some information on the history, landscape, beliefs, daily life, and occupations of the ancient Egyptians. Some of the two-page spreads include relevant quotes from citizens: the bragging of a soldier, a scribe's chauvinistic observations about metal workers and comments on the complaints of farmers (although the specific sources are not cited). Readers will learn how tomb builders shirked their duties while on the job-"brewing beer, building houses, and drinking." While the illustrations generally support the text, on a few occasions they don't correspond closely to it. For example, a photo of a tomb painting of the goddess Nut accompanies comments about mummification practices. Also, the photographs of the ancient sites are not always clear. Acropolis focuses on the buildings of ancient Greece but also includes information on daily life and ideas about war. Most of the photographs are outside scenes and are crisper than those in Valley of the Kings. One interesting shot illustrates the use of ratio in the Parthenon's design. Broad but useful overviews.
