Editorial Reviews

Across the East is the second album by Japan-based Spanish musician Rodrigo Rodriguez. The album brings to a conclusion 3 years of intensive work where Rodrigo was recording in the different studios, in Spain and Japan. Solo guitars, kena, clarinets, duets for shakuhachi flute and steel guitar, and pieces where Rodrigo has used for the first time the sheng (mouth organ). The sheng consists essentially of vertical pipes and is one of the oldest varieties of Chinese instruments. It first appeared in 551 BC during the Zhou Dynasty (1111 to 222 BC). Also featured is the rare African thumb piano samsula similar to kalimba and the exotic instruments from Indonesia the Gamelan (bonang, sarong, kenong.) The fujara, a large folk shepherd's fipple flute of unique design, originating from Slovakia in a unique and emotional solo. In addition, Rodrigo brings to the "Across the East" the originality and minimalism using the case of a guitar like a percussion instrument, in a Spanish influenced rhythm. Track list: 1. Across the East 2. Something in This Lake 3. Whispers in the Temple 4. The Second Day 5. Turtle Ceremony 6. Fish's Fugue 7. Tragedy of the Princess 8. Queen's Dancing Night 9. For Carolina 10. Within the Light 11. Eastern Horses 12. White Hills 13. Hedge of the Dawn

5.0 out of 5 stars Writings by Serge Kozlovsky, July 19, 2010

This review is from: Across the East (Audio CD)
Rodrigo Rodriguez' music is fully meditative. "Across the East" is a smooth flight on the wings of a fresh wind to mysterious eastern lands. The musician uses many unique authentic instruments on his album (sheng, shakuhachi, kena, oud, samsula and many others). Sometimes listening to Rodrigo Rodriguez' music reminds me of the best Windham Hill Records' works, but this musician has his own style which can't be compared with anyone. And so much beauty is in Rodrigo Rodriguez' music!

As you sit, you listen to this music and you simply become one with yourself. You stay in the present moment and you don't want to leave it. And this moment is suddenly filled with such an inexpressible bliss...

Listen to "Across the East" and begin a beautiful journey!

Serge Kozlovsky
