5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing ...
First of all, it's very difficult to properly review this soundtrack without seeing the movie. Each song is performed in a particular context ... very creatively, I might add ... and forming an opinion on just the song itself without having the visual that Julie Taymor put with it is not doing yourself, or the creative work, proper credit.

It's my opinion that holding out for the Deluxe Edition is definitely the way to go here; the additional work by Secret Machines and the longer version of "Let It Be" make this one indespensable.

I just saw the movie tonight and it is brilliant. And each song was amazingly portrayed on film. While "Let It Be" was by far my favorite song (as well as gut wrenching scene), I swear I will never hear "Strawberry Fields Forever" in the same way. These songs really MUST be heard with the visual that Julie brilliantly directed. I cannot stress that enough.

This album is not about paying homage to The Beatles as much as it was to use the Beatles music to tell a story. And trust me, that it has done.

3.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS CD....GET THE DELUX EDITION, September 16, 2007
This review is from: Across the Universe (Audio CD)
Ok so i pre-ordered this b/c i love the beatles and was very excited to get this. Now onto the bad part. The songs are great don't get me wrong...but there are at LEAST 4 missing from this cd in comparison to the DELUX EDITION (available on itunes). For example "Girl" "Dear Prudence" "I want you" and "If i fell" None of those are on this CD, great cd but not the one you want to buy!

3.0 out of 5 stars Buy the Deluxe Version, September 18, 2007

Saw the movie and loved it, but I was blown away by the soundtrack even more. Let It Be is not To BE believed.

Won't repeat the praise of other posters. However, just wanted to let you know that I picked up the Deluxe Edition at Best Buy tonight for the sale price of $9.99! Yes, all 31 songs. I'm located in Chicago but I saw the price at Best Buy's online site. So, I presume all the Best Buys are selling it for the same price. Otherwise, it is available from Best Buy online.

I have no interest in Best Buy. Just letting everyone know that the Deluxe Version can currently be picked up quite cheap.

1.0 out of 5 stars "All you Need is" the Deluxe Edition!, February 23, 2008

First of all there are two soundtracks that are better than this: One is a 29-track version available everywhere. The other is a 31-track version sold only through iTunes and Best Buy. There is no reason ANYONE should by THIS. Here are some of the reasons:

1. Here are the missing songs("Why Don't We Do It In The Road" and "I Want You(She's So Heavy)" are only available through the iTunes and Best Buy versions): Girl, Hold Me Tight, With A Little Help From My Friends, Let It Be(Long Version), Why Don't We Do It In The Road, I Fell, I Want You(She's So Heavy), Dear Prudence, Flying(by Secret Machines), Blue Jay Way(by Secret Machines), Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite(by Eddie Izzard), Because, Revolution, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Don't Let Me Down, and ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE!!!How could this not have ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE??

2. The 29-track Deluxe Edition costs $9.99 while this costs $10.97! The 31-track album costs $14.99.

3. Its missing ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE, how could it be, that's the most iconic moment in the movie!

BOTTOM LINE(literally): DO NOT BUY THIS EDITION!

1.0 out of 5 stars Buy the Deluxe version, not this, October 29, 2007
This review is from: Across the Universe (Audio CD)
Interscope Records has released three variations of soundtrack albums from the film - a standard edition and two deluxe editions. The standard edition contains 16 tracks from the film soundtrack. The first version of the deluxe edition features 31 tracks - all of the vocal performances and one of the three instrumental tracks. This 31-track version is available solely at the Best Buy retail chain and in a digital version via iTunes. A second version of the deluxe edition is available at other retail outlets. The second version differs from the 31-track version in that it omits two tracks: "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" and "Why Don't We Do It In The Road?". The total time for these two missing tracks is 5 minutes.

If you can get the 31-track version without a lot of hassle, then do so, even though the singer of the 2 songs, Dana Fuchs, isn't considered a particularly good singer or actor and the two missing songs aren't highlights. I see no point in buying the 16-song single CD version when for $2 more you get more than 54 minutes of extra music.

The 29-track version is excellent and worth the money. Virtually every song is done in a manner very different from the original by the Beatles and yet it is very enjoyable and tasteful. Great, innovative cover versions, an amazing feat.

A final comment. Interscope Records is to be distained for releasing 2 different Deluxe versions and causing both buyers and sellers a lot of needless decision making problems. Obviously Best Buys made some marketing arrangement with Interscope Records but it won't generate enough extra cash to compensate for all of the bad PR and angst that this will generate.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love the movie and the soundtrack, September 29, 2007
By
Alonway (Los Angeles, Ca) - See all my reviews

I love this movie, so I love the soundtrack, because when I hear the songs I am transported back to my favorite scenes in the film. I think the singing is very well done and I really enjoy these versions of the songs. Normally, I'd say that I don't like them nearly as much as the original versions. That would be true if this was just a collection of Beatle's songs re-done by various artists. However, when we are talking about songs that tell a story in the movie, I have to say I enjoy the songs a lot more and (dare I say it) almost as much as the originals. I guess my point is that, although you may like this st if you haven't seen the movie, I think you will like it more if you have. However, if you do listen to it before seeing the movie, keep an open mind and please realize that, in some instances, the context in which the song is used warrants a rather different version from what you may be used to hearing. Oh, and I'd definitely recommend getting the deluxe version.

My mother picked up this album first and she said it right: "Oh, my God. It's beautiful... it's poetry." I agree. Each song is better than the next and it plays like a journey. I put it on my iPhone and just strolled in the park. You'll dance, you'll cry -it's better than Cats. And yes, get the Deluxe Edition for a dollar more. P.S. Hey, Sony, where the hell is this movie playing, anyway?!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, moving, brilliant piece of work., September 16, 2007
This review is from: Across the Universe (Audio CD)
I love love loved the film. It is this beautiful mixture of elements from Hair & Moulin Rogue blended together with perfect casting, a dream soundtrack with covers of the best music ever recorded that would do the Fab 4 proud. Visually stunning, this film brought me to tears not just because of things that happen to the characters but because of the emotion of the music. I am a huuuuge Beatles fan and was very skeptical about how the songs would be performed. Every song was done beautifully by the cast and fit perfectly into the story by Julie Taymor. I could gush and gush forever on this film - I loved it and can't wait to see it again.
