More dynamics would have been appreciated!,
This review is from: Acrostichon (Audio CD)
Belgium isn't the first country you think about when it comes to progressive rock, but this band was supposed to be a good 70's symphonic band so I gave it a go. I had high hopes for this album seeing it compared to early Genesis (in particular) and other great bands in the same style. But I must say that this album focuses on the calmer side of Genesis progressive period. It's closer to the softer songs on Trespass, Trick of the tail and Wind and Wuthering than full of shifting time signatures and dynamic themes. But the songs here are good though, full of emotion and with great romantic themes. The problem is that after the 3 song you would have wanted some more "action", some wild and tight theme changes. Instead, the same calm and passionate mood is maintained throughout. So this Genesis sounding album is closer to a german band like Neuschwanstein than say Kyrie Eleison. If you don't mind a whole album with very mellow, symphonic rock and good songs, then this one might be for you. But if you want more contrasts, fast time changes and the likes, then you - like me - would probably be slighly disappointed when hearing this album. Not bad, but more sprawling compositions and shifting dynamics would have made this album one of the better progressive rock albums from Belgium.
