2.0 out of 5 stars Not very useful information
This book was of very little use to me. I was looking for something that would explain the different uses of acrylic and how to use different techniques to achieve different outcomes but there isn't enough detail to get much help from it. Also, I wouldn't do most of the painting styles so it is hard to take anything useful from them.

The painting techniques of seven master artists, whose styles are quite diverse, are highlighted in as many chapters of this book. Textural techniques, flat opaque colors, ultra-realism, impasto, luminosity through thin glazes and experimental abstracts are all carefully described and illustrated on the pages. Not only do the artists take the reader through step-by-step demonstrations on one representative work, but they also showcase a gallery selection of other work that has been created through the same technique. My favorites were the incredibly dramatic, ultra realistic studies of still-life flowers by Barbara Buer. The technique of Michael Nevin, in his urban paintings shows an intense atmosphere of light and dark, reminiscent of Hopper. Although these are basic techniques, there is much to learn from the examples and the demonstrations are clearly described. Now, after reading the book, I am anxious to try this out for myself.

and your staring at the canvas waiting for something, anything to inspire you...

This book is excellent for taking your painting to the next level. Although the styles represented in the book are not my own, i took away several techniques after reading this book. The best thing about this book is it shows you HOW, so many books show the effect without the steps. Not this one, it's all laid out in an easy to understand and non-intimidating fashion.

I purchased this book for a class that I am taking. It was the selected book for the class. It is excellent. I find it to be extremely readable and the examples and illustrations are very good. It would be an excellent book for self-study as well as for use in a classroom environment. I would highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, January 12, 2008
This review is from: The Acrylic Painter's Book of Styles and Techniques (Paperback)
I don't see what people have to complain about in this book. It's 7 chapters show some good techniques from different painters, with more than one example and step by step instructions. I think what some people need to understand is that a book may only teach you a few things about painting and drawing, it cannot actually paint the picture for you. Do not expect to be painting like a pro just because you have read this book; it includes exactly what is stated in the title.

This book has a good range of artists with differnt styles and helpful step-by step demos and "how to" comments from each artist. If you are new to painting I would recommend pairing this with a book that covers basic techniques in more detail. I found that this book combined with "The Acrylics Book" by Barlcay Sheaks to be an excellent combination. I'm very happy I bought this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for a beginner - very inspiring!, February 2, 2010

I, living in Utah with all of the arches, loved chapter 2 showing the brillitant designs with the flat opaque colors by Mary Sweet. I think this will be a simple, yet beautiful, way to begin my painting adventure because she laid out - step by step - instructions on how to paint with her technique. I have a photo of an arch which I have already climbed. I am looking forward to this being my first painting, and appreciate all of the different artist idea's which were presented in this book. I ordered three artists books at the same time and this is the book which I keep going back to. I will eventually try all of the techniques - when I become a better painter!

I really like this book, only a few artist I didn't care for. The techniques were just styles I personally don't care for. It is just a matter of preference. The pictures and examples were great to look at, they motive and inspire new ideas for those that are already painters.

I found the book to be very informative and, at times, inspiring. With the broad variety of styles discussed, there should be something for everyone. The works of Mr. Hook and Ms. Buel are particularly inspiring. I recommend it to any aspiring artist.
