Who was Moses?, November 24, 2011
This review is from: Act of God: Moses, Tutankhamun and the Myth of Atlantis (Hardcover)
This is another book about the possibility of Tuthmosis being the Moses of the Old Testament instead of it being Akhenaten. The theories and evidence provided here are very good, since he was around at the same time as Akhenaten.
Some very interesting points are brought up as to where did Akhenaten get his ideas of a spiritual God with no real definitions during this time. The authors seem to suggest he got the ideas from the Hebrews, but they were also just developing their monotheistic belief systems at the same time. The early god of Abraham was depicted as more human and definitely male rather than the asexual or bisexual Aten image of a god. This area is one that needs much further research than the book gives.
The book is a very quick read and has a lot of nice information, but it actually raises more questions than its conclusions. I think it is very possible Tuthmosis was Moses (especially since the last part of the name is close to Moses) but won't rule out Akhenaten as Moses either.
The reality was Moses was a powerful Egyptian member of royalty who is never clearly identified in the OT.
While I enjoyed the book, it felt like it was not finished. I was really getting into the book and it just ends without any real conclusion. There are many other books on this subject, and this one does have a brief summary at the end of each chapter which helps. Overall, this book is worth it as a bargain book, but not at a high price. I like Mr Phillips' style of writing and will read his other books. I do hope he has more meat and potatoes instead of just salad.
