Are You a Patsy?,
By
This review is from: Act Like a Gentleman, Think Like a Woman: A Woman's Response to Steve Harvey's Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man (Paperback)
Well this was a fantastic book!! I won the book in the Library Thing Member Giveaway program and was looking forward to reading it. I have yet to read Steve Harvey's book that this book is written in response to. I will be reading Steve Harvey's book soon. Act like a Gentleman, Think like a Woman was a very entertaining read even though I am a woman. I could see myself in some of the descriptions of the different types of woman she talks about. I know I am not a Patsy, the name she gives to the woman that every man wants.
Maria writes that Steve's book is talking about how all women want is to get the ring from the guy. She counters with the fact that all men want is to get laid. I found myself laughing while reading the book, because of the things she revealed about woman and saying how we love to hear how beautiful we are and that it should be all about us. I have to agree and disagree with that. It is great when a guy praises you and flatters you but sometimes it can get very annoying if it is the only thing that they talk about. I realized that when my hubby says things like that, that I do get turned on. It is nice to hear, we sometimes need to be praised to continue to be happy. At least that is what I noticed in myself while reading this book. I don't know if everything will work in this book for a guy to find that Patsy so that he can get laid. I will say if you find the girl she describes then you should have no problem with getting what you want.

Advice you can hang your tophat on...,

This review is from: Act Like a Gentleman, Think Like a Woman: A Woman's Response to Steve Harvey's Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man (Paperback)
Sly wit and insightful wisdom; that's what you'll find in Bustillos' answer to Steve Harvey's Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man.
In the aptly titled Act Like a Gentleman, Think Like a Woman, Bustillos has laid out a rational, yet at the same time hilariously pseudo-illogical rebuttal to Harvey's interpretation of what women want. Women, according to Harvey, are primarily concerned with things like "How to Get That Ring," whereas the average man, Bustillos points out in her blunt, big-sisterly way, quite contrarily just want to get laid. And how's a guy supposed to accomplish that when Harvey's blabbed all of mankind's deepest darkest and coached women everywhere on how to overcome them? Bustillos has generously offered up a fount of knowledge obtained after a lifetime of being, well, a woman--but not just any woman--she's one of the sharpest, funniest women around. Whether you're a man sincerely interested in learning how to bag that gal, or a woman who likes to snort (with laughter) your way through a quirky read, I highly recommend Act Like a Gentleman, Think Like a Woman.

Maria Bustillos's "Act Like a Gentleman, Think Like a Woman," offers up witty insights that will pretty much guarantee that male readers will be able to bed certain available females. But don't think it's just for the guys. Women readers will laugh as they recognize themselves and their friends in Bustillos's sharp prose. Since Bustillos is revealing what many women really want, it's a win for everyone--guys get to date the unattainable women they never thought they could, and the lucky women get to date a guy that is armed with the knowledge of how to please them.
Since this comes from a woman, it doesn't involve the gamesmanship suggested in other books, and men will be relieved to know that they do not have to dress like sex pirates in order to score. Luckily for the guys, it's short and succinct. You can read it in an evening and be striking gold at the clubs the next day!

This review is from: Act Like a Gentleman, Think Like a Woman: A Woman's Response to Steve Harvey's Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man (Paperback)
On the face of it, this is a book for men about how to get laid. It was written, apparently, as a response to the bestselling Act Like A Lady Think Like A Man by the comedian, Steve Harvey, which is supposed to instruct women in the psychology of men so that they can catch their men and get themselves the Prize (so he says) of marriage. The woman who wrote this book, it seems, thought the scales ought to be balanced on the other side by showing men how to get what they want (so Harvey also says) out of the relationship-bargain, viz., sex. Most of the books on this subject have been written by men. As Ms. Bustillos says, if you want to bag a lion, you shouldn't ask the hunter, you should ask the lion. Set a thief to catch a thief, as they say.
And it certainly is an eye-opener in that respect. Here I thought I had a fair idea about how the female mind worked. Pff! I realize now I knew almost nothing. All those Mars and Venus books, the Light My Fires and How To Pick Up Women, these are mere hen-scratchings on the surface of this universally interesting subject. This book really cuts to the heart. And the secret is extraordinarily simple. Not only simple, but available to every man, even those who might previously have thought themselves severely handicapped in this game. Why, I began to ask myself as I read, has nobody thought to write this book until now? Even though it pretends to be written for men, and particularly young men with no real clue about how to conduct their side in the battle of the sexes, this book will surely appeal to a much wider audience. Parents, for example, absolutely have to read this book if they want to guard their teenage daughters. Every teenage daughter needs to be armed with a copy before going forth into the dangerous world of courtship or college. Married men, if they want to stay married. And women of every age, particularly those who have found themselves going round and round in an endless circle of broken relationships, can now find out how to escape from that vicious trap. You would think, given the subject matter, this would be a rather crass book, wouldn't you? On the contrary, I think the eggheads will like it, too. (Not surprisingly, given the author's other book, Dorkismo: The Macho of the Dork). It is, at heart, a biting social commentary as well as a How To. In short: ADD TO SHOPPING CART! PROCEED TO CHECKOUT!

Fun read to be sure, but offers a truly sensitive and serious commentary,

I had a blast reading this book, and in one short afternoon, too. What began as a light, often side-splittingly funny, response to the Harvey book, ended up having a lot to say, really, about dating and mating - specifically, what it is that makes a woman tick, and how men can get what they want whether they be sincere in it or no.

Is it a satire or not? 'Cause it would totally work.
Over the years, I've had several men friends reveal to me that they found it incredibly depressing (after the initial euphoria) to learn how easy most women really were -- even "nice girls." Yep, the truth is painful; however, like most agonies of the soul, it's also funny, and Ms. Bustillos makes hay with that (bless her). This is a very naughtily effective how-to guide, a social commentary, and a surprisingly tender love-letter to love -- and no, it's not trying to talk anyone out of their quickies or into marriage (far from!). I'm not familiar with Steve Harvey's book (other than what's generally been said about it), but that didn't diminish the fun of "Act Like a Gentleman" for me; the book stands on its own. It is entertaining and quick, and it's so zippy and good-natured you almost don't realize until after the fact how sharp it is. The big question for me is...do I let my teenaged son read this? (Ha, like I could stop him!)

This book is funny.
It claims to be advice, from a woman's perspective, on how to get a woman into bed. And it certainly covers this topic--mostly tongue-in-cheek--but it doesn't provide a whole lot of new information that an average-intelligence person could piece together on their own. And intermingled in the "how to get women into bed" advice, is a lot of "how to not get weaseled into bed" advice (for women). This book reads a lot like a stand-up comedy routine, albeit a rather wordy one. I must admit, I didn't read every page. Some sections I skipped, and some paragraphs I just skimmed. I felt like it got too wordy, and a bit repetitive at times. If you want a humorous commentary on the differences between men and women, you will enjoy this book. If you're actually trying to get laid more, this book probably isn't what you want. But I hope you're more like me, and reading the book for a laugh, and not because you think you need a book to overcome some sort of ego or personality flaw. And finally, the Kindle formatting is *horrendous!* The book keeps jumping between two typefaces--some times mid-sentence.

I bought this book because I'd so much enjoyed Ms Bustillos' Dorkismo and was confident it would entertain AND give me food for thought. I was right, but this time, with her tongue popping in and out of her cheek, she focuses on the female psyche (and the fact that so many men have no idea how it works). So we get the inside track on seduction techniques that are more likely to succeed than the hit and miss (usually miss) varieties which, incomprehensibly, have prevailed thus far. I haven't read the book to which this is a response but really don't feel I need to. This is complete in itself; a wry, smile-inducing take on the whole process, written in a style that addresses the reader directly almost as a friend. So if your sights are set on any woman other than the 'hideous, unwashed, toothless hags of ninety' whom Ms Bustillos excludes from her target group, this may well be your way to the promised land.

The advise is not good at all......it was to repetitive to the point of becoming redundant. Nothing in the book can tell a guy how to think like a woman period. The author just did not like Steve Havey's book and wanted to write something back. My opinion that is.

OK book...Wrong Title...There is nothing "gentlemenly" about this book at all !,

This review is from: Act Like a Gentleman, Think Like a Woman: A Woman's Response to Steve Harvey's Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man (Paperback)
This book is an ok read. However, the title is not fitting based on the content. There is nothing "gentlemenly" about this book at all lol. I also do not believe that this is a true "response" to the Steve Harvey book. I understand the authors concept but I think it missed the mark in three key ways which is what I was expecting to read;
1. Completely missed the mark for men that are trying to understand the female need to be in relationships and how to stay away from that lol and to help men that are in relationsips understand their woman(which to me would be the true response to the Steve Harvey book). It's ashame that this author used this title incorrectly and stops someone else from using it for a true response. 2. It gives the impression that these techniques will work on "any" woman. There are different types of women and though some of these ideas could be a basis of a guys game, if used in the wrong way, on the wrong woman, could be a total turnoff, like I was just by reading some of the suggestions. 3. It's 2009. Honestly if a guy is having difficulty getting a girl into bed a book isnt going to help. There are books like "The Game" and others before this that were written when women weren't already halfway undressed walking down the street and everything sexual for women was taboo and men actually had to work to get a woman in bed. A book like this in 2009 is really not that innovative to me. Just my opinion, but I am still waiting on a response to the Steve Harvey book, unfortunately now the future author will have to use a different title. |
