Biography

Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Buck Owens, along with Merle Haggard, was the leader of the Bakersfield sound, a twangy, electricified, rock-influenced interpretation of hardcore honky tonk that emerged in the '60s. Owens was the first bona fide country star to emerge from Bakersfield, scoring a total of 15 consecutive number one hits in the mid-'60s. In the process, he provided an edgy… Read more in Amazon's Buck Owens Store

Editorial Reviews

2008 five CD set that contains Buck's complete recordings 1953-64 including demos, singles, LPs, unreleased songs and more. This 159 track box features all of his history-making hits ('Under Your Spell Again', 'Above And Beyond', 'Act Naturally', 'Love's Gonna Live Here' and many, many more) plus the rarities that only Bear Family uncovers! Includes ultra-rare sessions featuring Buck as a session musician in 1953-54 and two unreleased performances and 12 alternate takes! This collection brings forth the Big Bang of Bakersfield Country music. This is how it happened, record by record, session by session! Bakersfield had a fertile country scene B.B. (before Buck), but he put it on the map with an epochal string of Top Ten and #1 singles from 1959-1988, paving the way for fellow Bakersfielders Merle Haggard, Bonnie Owens and Red Simpson. While Nashville slicked up its music to snare pop fans in the 60s, Buck's bare-bones honky tonk kept it real and twangin'. Bear Family.

5.0 out of 5 stars MORE BANG FOR YOUR "BUCK", December 3, 2010

WOW!! Where do I begin with this set!! I mean you not only get all of Buck's recording's between 1953-1964, but you also get the stuff he was recording as Corky Jones. And man what better folks to bring it to you than Bear Family Records out of Gerrmany. It is true they are a bit pricey.. But their main focus is evident the minute you put this in your disc player. They have never dissapointed me in a purchase.. You get 5 disc and a really cool hard cover book that includes never before seen photos of Buck and The Buckaroos. it is so great to hear Buck and Don Rich harmonizing on these great songs.. Don's Telecaster never sounded better than it does on this set. If your a Buck Owens fan get this great set.. You deserve it!

I already had a lot of Buck, but I knew I was missing much of his earlier work. This set was the answer. I found this collection to be all that I had hoped for; some very pleasant surprises, especially the duets. If you love Buck, this set's for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars New fan, May 31, 2009
This review is from: Act Naturally: 1953-64 (Audio CD)
I discovered this music purely by accident. I was a fan of Hee Haw as a kid but never thought of Buck Owens as serious artist. This disc compilation is amazing. The Buck Owens sound is difficult to put in words. The sound of the slide guitar, the purity of the acoustic bass and Buck's perfect voice gives me chills. The recordings on these discs is clear and a joy to listen to over and over. Give him a try with a greatest hits disc then buy this set.
