About the Author

Julie Shifman started her career as a ballet dancer, leaving ballet to go to law school. After a successful career as a lawyer in New York City and Cincinnati, she reinvented herself again in 2000, establishing Shifman & Associates, a nonprofit business-consulting firm. In 2008, as her own children were leaving the nest, Julie founded Act Three, a company that helps women across the country attain an exciting next stage of life.

In 2010, Julie launched her popular inspirational women's event called ''Imagine . . . Then Do It!'' She is now a sought-after inspirational speaker for women's events and workshops around the country and is a certified coach. She is a recipient of the prestigious Athena award by Cincy magazine and was named as a ''Woman to Watch'' by the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Julie has been married to her husband for twenty-seven years, is the mother of four sons, and is actively involved in the Cincinnati community. She is currently a board member of the United Way of Greater Cincinnati, Talbert House and the Cincinnati Ballet Company.

More About the Author

Julie Shifman is an inspirational, award winning, speaker, author and business owner. Julie believes in every woman's ability to challenge herself and to grow as Julie herself continues to do. She started her career as a professional ballet dancer and then became a highly successful lawyer in New York City and in Cincinnati before founding her company Act Three in 2008. She is also a certified coach and was an adjunct professor of business law at Xavier University. She recently received the prestigious Athena award by Cincy Magazine and was named as a Woman to Watch by The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Julie Shifman energizes women to live their best lives. She challenges her audience to Imagine a changed life by using her own personal story of Imagining and changing; from ballerina to law partner... to stay at home mother... to business owner. And Julie shares that Imagining alone is not enough. It's the combination of Imagining and Doing that creates the magic.

Julie speaks with passion, humor, and heart as she energizes women to both Imagine what's next for them and then to take one small step at a time as they Do It. Not satisfied to just inspire her audience to imagine, she calls upon them to act. Each audience member is encouraged to leave with a written commitment to move forward towards achieving their goals.

Julie is the founder and President of Act Three, an organization that helps women to define their next stage of life and to create their own personal action plan for actually living out that life. She is the author of the book Act Three: Creating the Life You Want which illustrates the Act Three process using the stories and life lessons of remarkable women she interviewed across the country. Julie has also created a documentary film featuring many of these incredible women.

This easy read is hard to put down. Each woman's story illustrates their own obstacles and their own amazing success. These women are each remarkable-Shifman identifies common strengths and challenges so many women face.
The advise is so motivating and yet so grounded and realistic. This book is a great gift for any woman looking for their own Act Three-no matter what their age.

Act Three was the "tool" I needed to expand my thoughts and actions to move forward in my life! This book set other motivating books apart, as it offered a realistic approach to the words, "I can do it"! I enjoyed reading of other women who face the same obstacles of fear, self-doubt and needless excuses that most of us have at certain times of our life. These women showed us that through perseverance, determination, as well as set-backs and starting over, goals can be achieved! Thank you Julie for providing this wonderful "tool" that we can all use no matter what stage we are in!

Format: Paperback
Author Julie Shifman focuses her "Imagine, then do it" philosophy on the at-home motherhood population looking for their next "Act," whether it be paid work, a social action project, or a personal health goal. Ten of Shifman's 11 chapters feature a specific woman's "Act Three" story to illustrate the steps in her dreaming/visualizing/creating/persevering process. A number of the stories are about "relaunching" careers, including that of Diane Rehm, who was home with her kids when she took on a volunteer position at a local radio station which ultimately turned into the popular and long-running "The Diane Rehm Show." As someone who is intensely interested in the power of real life stories, I enjoyed the story-telling emphasis of Shifman's book.

Julie's book wakes us up to the fact that we need to seriously re-think our assumptions. Believe in the value of our passions, goals and follow our dreams. She engagingly captures the stories of ordinary individuals whose lives took an extraordinary turn including her own: setting and meeting bold new challenges, discovering dazzling gifts, or achieving life-long goals - excelling and in every case making contributions to society.

As the kids make their way out of our homes and into the world, it is hard not to think about our own future. We all want to feel that we can and do make a difference in this world, but so many of us don't know the best way to find our "life's purpose". This book points the way with practical suggestions and much food for thought. An easy read, it pushes us to examine our true desires, while gaining insights about the obstacles that hold us back. Along the way there are true stories of those who have realized their dreams, providing inspiration and motivation to help us get started.
Great little book!
