One of the great acting books by a great teacher, July 13, 2009
This review is from: Acting and Performing (Paperback)
The only detailed description of Hayes Gordon's approach to acting. Hayes was briefly a student of Sandy Meisner's, and a longer time student of Lee Strasberg. An accomplished actor and singer, he moved to Australia as a result of the McCarthy era politics in America. Once ashore, he quickly became a sought after teacher of acting technique. Principally Strasberg based, Hayes extended these techniques over forty years of teaching. Widely regarded as the finest acting teacher in Australia's theatrical history.
The book itself contains all of Hayes' techniques. It was written later in his life to ensure the knowledge he had gained was not lost. It is very detailed and covers a lot of ground. However, it is not for the feint hearted. I had the fortune to have studied under Hayes which made the book readily accessible for me. If you have studied Strasberg techniques then this will complement that. As a first acting book I think this would be pretty heavy going, but you would learn a lot. For the more experienced actor, this would give you a whole lot of new techniques you probably haven't seen before.
An amazing book from an amazing teacher.
