5.0 out of 5 stars over and over and over....
is how I listen to this cd. I mean, wow. this is one of the few, the proud cds that i can listen to over and over, on repeat, and go crazy every time. it's honestly just an awesome cd and rises above so many other, mediocre releases from bands in the same genre. Punchline brings new life and meaning to the dreaded words, "pop-punk."

3.0 out of 5 stars Basic and in need of energy
Punchline is a band that has a lot of potential. The problem is that they write lifeless songs that don't seem to hit the mark. I tried to love this cd but I only got to the ok level. It's just to basic and pop punk to the tee. They could have strayed off the beaten path and produced something unlike what is on Fueled by Ramen records but they fell into the Fall Out...

go out and buy this NOW and listen to it on repeat.. but don't blame me when you break stuff from jumping around like you're on speed ;)

here's the cd cover:

here are the tracks for you, since amazon.com doesn't seem to care:
1) OPEN UP (I love every part of this song, especially the shout-singing)
2) NOT AFRAID "you're CRAZY - is that what i'm gonna hear?"
3) THE WORLD (funky vocal solo-thing; singer holding out a note for like 17 seconds - awesome)
4) HEART TRANSPLANT (you will be addicted to this song.)
5) Time In A Picture (the song with sad emo lyrics and a great, quiet, emotional outro)
6) COLDEST OF CALENDARS (pretty, sad, everything good. especially the lyrics)
7) GETTING THERE IS GETTING BY (this will be stuck in your head forever; catchy as hell; especially good vocals here.)
8) WHY IS HE RIGHT (quirky-cool intro, good stuff)
9) BATTLESCARS (anthemic and so awesome, the best part: "think about/ this every day/We all get old/ and fade away/ But through it all/ I won't forget/YOU.........!!")
10) A SHARP IS A FLAT (inspiring and touching without being cheesy, more good stuff)
11) A BEAUTIFUL GREEN (stripped down to basics + a lot of rhythm section + simple, thoughtful lyrics = quality song)
12) JUST GETTING STARTED (another shamelessly catchy one ^_^)

my faves (in order) are: 4, 1, 9, 3, 11, 7, 6, 5, 10
yes i'm aware that's practically the whole album, but hey. they're outstanding songs! and disgustingly catchy.
actually, listening to the songs, i really love 12, 2, and 8 as well... so just buy the album!

and while you're at it, buy The Rewind EP, cause it's awesome and Play is the best song ever.

I've been listening to Punchline since 2003 and this is one of the best albums I've ever heard. From the first track, Open Up, to the very last track, Just Getting Started, it doesn't get old. The lyrics are pretty witty. If you are impressed with their album, definitely check these guys out. They are one of my favorite bands.

And for the person below who said if you like FOB & The Academy Is.. then you won't like Punchline, wrong. FYI, Fall Out Boy is my favorite band and Punchline falls right behind them. Some people just don't know talent when they hear it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great album that just needs a little polishing., September 13, 2005

I had never listened to Punchline prior to going to a show this August in Denver. I was very impressed with their live performance, and thought they were very worthy of touring with RBF.

The members of the band were actually selling this album to people walking by after the show, and a friend of mine and I each picked one up. I'm very glad I did, as I've found a band that will be a favorite of mine for years to come.

I've found each song to be well crafted if a little a rough. I disagree with several of the prior reviews - the lyrics are inspired and the music itself, while not of a notable difficutly level or having a completely original sound, is actually quite wonderful. The guitars are solid and the bass and percussion certainly serve their purpose. There are no "empty" areas where I feel they could have done more with their sound.

Track 3, "World," has become an instant classic in my music library. Steve shows himself as a great lyricist throughout this entire song. I find his ability to create a great vocal rythym very refreshing. His selection of words is unique in comparison to a lot of the generic pop-punk that we hear today - I'm getting quite tired of hearing the same phrases from 3 different bands, and that doesn't happen with Punchline. There is very little "screaming," which I am thankful for. Mostly we just get to hear the very melodic vocals.

Among the other songs, "Heart Transplant" and "Time in a Picture" really stand out to me, as well as "Coldest of Calendars" as mentioned in a previous review. Each song is a wonderfully unique piece that I feel distinguishes Punchline from other bands of their Genre (AND their label).

Listening to this album just a few times does not do it justice. Get a feel for songs, for the rythym and flow of the lyrics, the wonderful vocals, and then maybe you'll get a real appreciation for this album. The only reason it doesn't get five stars is the fact that I know they can do better and this album could be polished up in a few places (not that I could do any better...).

Once again, I'm happy to have bought this CD. It's quickly risen to punk "classic" level for me. I think these guys have a bright future, and I'm pulling for them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Melodic, July 17, 2005

This cd really grew on me quickly. Other reviewers have said that this band has some growing to do but there is talent, and I agree. They have a lot of talent and this CD highlights both their talents and their shortcomings. However it's the bits and pieces that are missing from this CD that honestly makes me enjoy it more than many other albums. There is a 'not quite finished' sound to parts of the CD, a lack of quality in the mixing and mastering more than anything at times which robs some of the songs of the studio induced 'energy' other albums higher budget albums have. Also the vocalist isnt quite there yet, and his lyrics are a little weak at times but overall I think it works well.
My favorite part of Punchline is the creative little melodies that the guitarist comes up with. They're simple but pleasing and I think thats when punk is at its best. Maybe its a tribute to the underlying talent of this band that althou this record falls short of what it could be, it is still one of my favorite albums over the past year. This is definately worth purchasing, also check out their EP 'Play' especially the track titled "Stop".
I dont think this band is half as unoriginal as other reviewers have said and I dont think its fair to compare them to fallout boy just because they're on the same label. I think people that enjoy fallout boy would enjoy this disc but to say one is a cop of the other is an insult to both bands.

3.0 out of 5 stars Basic and in need of energy, July 10, 2005
This review is from: Action (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
Punchline is a band that has a lot of potential. The problem is that they write lifeless songs that don't seem to hit the mark. I tried to love this cd but I only got to the ok level. It's just to basic and pop punk to the tee. They could have strayed off the beaten path and produced something unlike what is on Fueled by Ramen records but they fell into the Fall Out Boy path and now they need to work on getting out of it.

The CD is bland other than Heart Transplant and Getting There is Getting By. Also, I believe The Coldest of Calenders is an excellent emotional song. They finally hit their mark. Then they wrote a bunch of other songs to fill out the CD and nothing really sticks with me. I gave the CD a three because their live show is 10x better than their recorded stuff. They played with A Thorn for Every Heart, Hidden in Plain View, and Hellogoodbye. They totally stole the show and the crowd went insane for them. It was a very energetic pit with a bunch of smiling happy kids. I wouldn't mind seeing them live again if they work their way to my section of the states.

But really, without the live element this is just too carbon copy to like. I think they could be great but they need to break out of the sameness FBR records makes. Shift to tooth and nail and work on something interesting! Not a bad cd, but not what it should be.

I've had half of these songs from demo cd's for like 6 years now, I didn't even know they had made a full length album until I saw it in the iTunes store on my computer. But like I said, I've had several of songs for some years and I still listen to them all the time, and they haven't gotten old. Unlike what some other dude said, I like The Academy Is and I like this band so screw that guy. The best song on the album is Battlescars without a doubt, but Beautiful Green and Getting There Is Getting By are damn good too. I'd say it's worth the buy.

I have been listening to Punchline for a long time and they are by far one of the best punk bands I have ever heard. They have catchy lyrics and great music. If you are a fan of punk music, you should definitely consider buying this album. The best song they ever wrote, however, is Play.

I'm so happy Punchline finally came out with a full length album. It sounds fantastic by the way. The best tracks are Open Up and Getting There is Getting By.Any emo fan has to add this to their collection.
