Holds Up Well as a complete CD,
By Andre M. "brnn64" (Mt. Pleasant, SC United States) - See all my reviews

It's hard to beleive that this was first issued in 1966 as a complete album, as the quality of material would make one think of it as a "Best Of" compilation. This is really great stuff. You could play it all the way through during a sunny drive, to "mellow out" to after a rough day at work, or for a romantic evening for two people who enjoy sweet 60s soul. All killer, no filler, and well worth the bucks.

Doo-wop meets Memphis Soul,
This review is from: In Action (Audio CD)
The Mad Lads were unique in that they blended their soulful doo-wop vocals with a fine Memphis studio band to create a lost treasure of late period doo-wop. Their version of "Land Of A Thousand Dances" is perhaps the best version ever, although every song on "In Action" is a winner including four bonus songs not on the original 1966 album. The sound is crisp and above average for a Collectibles release.

These reviews are spot on- this is such an overlooked group who were HUGE where I come from -Philly- with at least a half dozen classics. Though they were on the famous Stax-Volt label, they get short shrift and not even mentioned in Peter Guaralnick's book on the label. Only in a huge music town like Memphis could such a fantastic group be over-shadowed. You'll want the "Don't Have To Shop Around" CD as well, as it has "I Want A Girl" and "Patch My Heart." I've actually seen them a couple times in their heyday at Philly's Uptown Theater. As good as it gets, utterly unique in what they were doing at the time. As someone else said- "soul doo wop." If you're snooping around on this page, you might look into Philly's equally under-rated and sublime Intruders, as well.

Very under rated group with some excellent soul music, a great find and thanks to Felix Hernandez and his Rhythm Review for playing songs from artists like the Mad Lads as they deserve their due.
