Editorial Reviews

Review

Readers will find the text helpful in managing change. The book offers suggestions and tools to help overcome the complexities that arise when businesses or organizations face crises. ARL is an excellent strategy in terms of organizational development and provides trainers with powerful facilitation techniques. This would be a must-read for OD. --Creative Training Techniques

From the Publisher

What would workplace training be like if programs were designed to honor the diversity of learning styles and fully acknowledge the everyday realities of working adults? This is the story of Action Reflection Learning (ARL), a little-explored practice that has been inspiring individuals and transforming organizations for over 30 years. For the first time, ACTION REFLECTION LEARNING brings to light this time-tested approach that has demonstrated its power to revolutionize the way adult learners learn by fundamentally changing the way teaching and training are practiced.

Packed with dozens of just-in-time learning opportunities, ACTION REFLECTION LEARNING provides a hands-on guide to what ARL is, how it works, and what it takes to implement it in and outside the classroom. Coauthors Rimanoczy and Turner introduce the 16 key elements that drive ARL's success--all firmly grounded in adult learning and action learning principles. And through stories, journal entries, dialogues, and narrative case examples drawn from their own experience, they offer an inside look at the critical role the Learning Coach plays in unleashing the power of ARL to make one-on-one coaching more effective, help navigate a post-merger integration, prepare young talent for the next big challenge, or work with a team of educators in crisis. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

Isabel Rimanoczy grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina and moved to the USA in the late 90s. She worked as an Executive and Team Coach for many years, until she became more and more concerned with the question: What mark am I making? That led her to become a Legacy Coach, working with people who want to make a difference. She looked at the environmental, social and economic crisis we are experiencing and saw in this the manifestation of a historic evolution of humankind. In its center, lay three questions: Who are we? (Spirituality) What are we doing? (Business) and How are we doing it? (Sustainability). She teaches Sustainability Mindset at Fordham University and is the co-founder of the charitable organization Minervas, Women Changing the World.

ACTION REFLECTION LEARNING: SOLVING REAL BUSINESS PROBLEMS BY CONNECTING LEARNING WITH EARNING covers the basics of supporting fundamental changes in behaviors to encourage learning. Stories, journal entries, dialogues and other styles of case history examples from real life power a hands-on guide to Action Reflection Learning in practice, surveying its concepts, how they are applied, and how they make a difference within and outside the classroom. It's an exceptional hands-on opportunity to learn from others and a top pick for any business or education college-level library.

The writing is clear and readable. The examples are helpful in illustrating the approach of ARL. The approach is eclectic and wide ranging. It sounds more like a collection of well-known practices such as coaching and training and Appreciative Inquiry and personality styles than a unique approach, yet the authors give no credit to the originators of the practices they've adopted and synthesized. As an internal consultant, I also wanted more details instead of vague generalizations. The book deserves at least three stars - if not more - for adeptly combining useful OD practices and thinking broadly, but I withhold a higher rating due to the lack of details which would make the book more useful rather than just a sales pitch and due to the lack of giving credit where credit is due.

I found it a little too complicated to apply in the real life, particularly in the Coaching experience and actual life problem solving.
