My sons bought this because they were told it worked on both SP and DS, which it does - sort of. The cheat codes work only on SP games; there are no cheats for DS. This is clearly stated in the instruction manual but not on the outside packaging. My boys were disappointed because they thought they would get cheats for DS games also because the packaging says that it works with both SP and DS games.

Action Replay's for the Nintendo Handhelds have always been the ones that are least likely to mess up or break on you. Thats why they are a good buy. This particular one is great it comes with LOADS of pre-loaded codes for Pokemon Ruby to Sonic Advanced The few GBA games it doesn't have you can upload teh codes with the cable and disk included with product. My friend let me borrow this for Pokemon Emerald And it didn't have any Pre-loaded Emerald codes so I was screwed. You can Save & Load DS game files and GBA. Great. Too bad Animal Crossing DS: still isn't compatible with it after a month of it's release. Anyways if you sue this to get rare pokemon it doesn't let you trade them pokemon that are in this group are: Mew, Mewtwo, Deoxys. Good thing you can trade Jirachi. Hope you found my review helpful.
P.S. This Action Replay doesn't let you use actual codes with the DS games. All it does with DS games is saves and loads game files. thats about it not much... Oh, and you can make roms with this I heard.

this does work. if people went to the website or looked a bit before buying it, they would have found out before. but instead people continue to be lazy. don't listen to them. if you want cheats there are websites that will supply them if you have this. it is worth the money.

I've been using this item myself and I've sold more than 30 of these units online through eBay and Amazon. I've never had any problem with it not working or failing, nor have any of my customers complained about problems either. When I initially tried to use it, it wouldn't work properly, but after going over the instructions a few times, I found out what the problem was and it was basically I was doing it wrong. Additionally, you can find tons of codes for this unit over the net. Some are made by Datel and others are created by individuals. You just need to do a search online for what you need. Just remember that this item can potentially damage your save file, however I've never had this problem nor have my customers. Additionally, I've never seen it actually damage a cartridge itself. Typically, if the game is freezing when you use it, you can simply stop using the unit and the game should function properly. Finally, as others have pointed out, this is really intended for use with GBA games more than DS titles. Part of the wording is because it can be used either with the old GBA systems or a Nintendo DS. While you may find some games on the DS that this will work for, if you are looking for a cheat device to use exclusively with DS games then you are better off buying the Action Replay for the DS that comes with a DS card instead of one that plugs into the GBA slot.

I bought this because it claimed compatability with the DS. I took it home, read the instructions, and found out "oh, you have to have an advance game for it to work" so I went back out and bought an advance game. When I went home again, I tried it with the advance game, like it said to, and oops! It didn't even recognize that something was plugged into the advance slot.
I heard about the "aluminum foil fix" and tried that, with the 4th and 5th pegs- when I turned my DS on after that, the game shut off automatically, and has never turned on again. It was 2 months old, but the warranty was voided because the foil shorted out the stupid thing. So I bought a new DS. It's now 2 weeks old. Today I went out and got a new AR... sigh, again, with a new DS and a new AR, nothing loads up. According to my DS, there is nothing in the slot. I emailed tech support, and got an automated reply that gave me a link to a website that lists all the FAQs they have in the booklet that comes with the freaking AR. Under the link, it said "This is the only email you will receive from us regarding your support request" EXCUSE ME? So they don't even read the help requests, just send out automated emails and assume that if you still need help you'll contact them again? well, I did, but I am NOT impressed by the turnaround time. Something that claims to have 24/7 customer service shouldn't take more than an hour to email you back... especially something that is in the tech field. I do NOT recommend this product, anything you have to pay $35 for, and it doesn't work... or even worse, it's something you have to solder yourself for it to work... how is that worth the money? Also, I've heard if you want it for DS saves, the save overwrites your save, so it isnt quite the same as using cheats in that respect. I'll be returning it tomorrow. And people, PLEASE (especially children <see above review>) DO NOT SOLDER THIS DEVICE WITH ALUMINUM FOIL OR ANYTHING ELSE UNLESS YOU ARE AN ACTUAL ELECTRICIAN. This is a dangerous thing to do, and you may be injured by it, besides ending up with a $130 lump of worthless plastic with the nintendo logo on the front.

I really enjoyed the old Action replay on GBA. My old AR broke for reasons unknown, so I picked this one up mainly for GBA because Datel has seemed to of discontinued the older models. I don't own a DS, so I will review the GBA side of the device.
My first complaint is, that it no longer lets you import codes. So if you own a game that's not on their preloaded or update list, you must add the codes on the gba manually. This is a long process and should have been thrown out. It comes with the abilty to link up with your pc, I think you should be able to atlest use your keybord to enter codes like on the older models. Next the interface isnt custom friendly. On both the pc software and the cart you can't highlight multiple code lists for games you dont own, and delete them in one big mass. You have to select codes one at a time, and it's even slower to do on pc. Last thing, it doesnt have the abilty to store or upload your save files to your pc. When you play with codes, you run the risk of corupting your save file. The DS side of the product can do this, why can't gba? I wouldn't recommend this product to GBA users. If you need a cheat device for GBA, check out a gameshark, code breaker, or try to find the older GBA only unit.

I can definitely really tell when a game needs the use of cheats, and the gamer needs it a whole lot more. That really hasn't been the case for Nintendo DS owners, and the recently conjured Action Replay. The Action Replay code enhancer for the Nintendo DS, doesn't really add up very well. The code device doesn't really offer a whole lot for any help on games for the DS like Super Mario 64 DS, Madden '06, or Need For Speed: Most Wanted. The device does however work well for people who own games for the Game Boy Advance as a double, if you have either the DS or the Game Boy Micro or GBA. There are great codes pre-loaded for the GBA like Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Brothers 3, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong's Quest, and many others.
All that I can say for Nintendo DS owners, you might be better off waiting for another version of the Action Replay to come out for DS games, but if have just any variation of the Game Boy Advance, or the Game Boy Player for the Nintendo Gamecube, then this might be a better buy. Code Enahncer: C- Price: C Game Boy Advance usage: B+ Nintendo DS usage: D+ Overall: C 1/2-

I tried this with Shining Soul II, game would constantly select the last option on any menu.
I tried this with Pokemon Pinball Ruby/Saphire, worked quite well. I tried this with Pinball of the Dead, the codes available both online and in the unit did not offer any real gameplay help. I tried this with Doom II, no codes available online or in the unit! Pros: 1) Some games work. 2) Menu system is easy to use. 3) Unit can backup DS games. Cons: 1) Company is not motivated to release new codes for existing games. 2) Unit does not offer cheats for DS games. 3) The scroll to last menu item bug prevents you from playing the games it affects.

Okay, first off, let me say that yes: I do think it's false advertising to say this "cheats" for the DS. But the little-known and absolutely wonderful use for this product is about to be busted wide open.
This seemingly useless-for-ds device can be used to remove your DS game's .sav files, or savestates. Why is this useful you ask? Well, if you play or own Pokemon Diamond or Pearl Versions, then you probably have heard of a useful little program called PokeSav. And while normally pokesav can export to Action Replay DS codes, the best way (without the BBME adapter) is to edit your game's .sav file! Well isn't it convenient that Datel have provided an easy way to access that? Basically, you can use the "Open" function in pokesav to open and directly edit you Diamond and Pearl gamesaves directly. It will also have all of your data input already (Name, Gender, ID, even Secret ID) which makes it much easier for you to edit. One cautionary word though- I haven't had this happen to me or my AR, but I've heard that Nintendo programmed some code into the DS that will fry any Gameshark-type devices plugged into the Slot-2 (GBA) slot, so you probably want to stick with using this on an SP (yet another reason to hang onto one). I fortunately haven't had this happen to me, but I saw one of my friends kill a Gameshark (the one that has the "carabiner clip" thing on it) by trying to use it on his DS Lite. So I do know this can happen ,but I don't know if this specific device is vulnerable (and I'm not about to risk my own to test it). Well, I hope this was informative and useful, and please stop flaming this great game enhancer. --NonaSuomi |
