Book Description

July 29, 2002

Tap into the full power of Flash MX by learning how and when to employ ActionScripting. ActionScripting in Flash MX is structured into 2 parts. In the Foundation section readers learn general programming theory and how it applies to Flash. Then the book progresses through more complex Flash ActionScripting applications, including functions, arrays, objects, components, and interfacing with external data. Short tasks and real-world analogies demonstrate specific concepts. In the Workshop section, the reader actually builds practical applications that range in complexity from beginner to advanced. At the end of the Workshop section, the reader will actually debug broken scripts.

About the Author

Phillip Kerman is an independent programmer, teacher and writer specializing in Macromedia products. His degree in Imaging and Photographic Technology from the Rochester Institute of Technology was earned back when "multimedia" involved programming multiple slide projector presentations with dissolves synchronized to a soundtrack. In 1993, he found Macromedia Authorware a natural fit to his interest and skills. Since then, he's transitioned his expertise from Authorware to Director, and now, to Flash. Phillip is also the author of best-selling book, Sams Teach Yourself Flash 5 in 24 Hours. (067231892X)

More About the Author

I've been teaching Flash since version 3 and writing books since version 5. I also do contract development (programming).

My early experiences in photography have a direct correlation to my job today. The feeling I get when I see a project that I assemble come to life is the same I'd get watching a photograph develop in the darkroom.

While I understand that great projects involve the work of many dedicated
people, I'm not shy to point out that I was the primary programmer for the following projects:
. the original Millennium Three site (archived at
http://www.deepplay.com/sites/m399/),
. a real-time Flash auction that consistently sells over $5
million in cattle during a typical 90-minute sale (http://www.stampedecattle.com),
. the site for the "other" cool office chair (http://www.allsteeloffice.com/number19/movie.asp),
. the Witness to History kiosk featured in the Communication Arts 11th Annual Interactive Exhibition (http://www.commarts.com/ca/interactive/cai05/36_ia05.html).

The short story of my rise from mere mortal to being in charge of everything at
phillipkerman.com LLC goes like this:
. I was a student photographer for Sunset High School's newspaper and yearbook
. I rode my bicycle from Portland, Oregon, to go to college in Rochester, New York
(and got all 2 years' worth of physical education credits waived in the process)
. I graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology with a bachelor of science in imaging and photographic technology
. I worked for Sinar Bron, Inc., selling premier professional photographic equipment
. I worked for The Human Element, Inc., doing Authorware (version 1) development
. Finally, I drove back to Portland, Oregon, where I've been doing contract work and teaching for more than 10 years.

5.0 out of 5 stars 18 Chapters of Flashing goodness!, September 12, 2002
This review is from: ActionScripting in Flash MX (Paperback)
This book covers the gamut from novice to expert, but it shows real strength in getting basic Flash users into some serious programming. Phillip Kerman starts off assuming knowledge of fundamental tools and animation, and moves right into building familiarity with ActionScript programming concepts. Throughout, Kerman walks the line between general good practices and AS specifics. All of this is done in a conversational tone, with clear explanations and very applicable examples. One gets the feeling that Mr. Kerman is in the room, helping you along your journey to truly interactive, deep Flash experiences.

The first half of ActionScripting in Flash MX is devoted to getting a solid base for building projects on your own. Some highlights here are the chapters on Functions and arrays, two very misunderstood areas for new developers. Kerman's efforts in Part 1 make his book worthwhile on thier own merit. Just to make sure you are completely satisified, however, there is an entire additional workshop section that lets you roll up your sleeves and play under the hood. It is important to note that ActionScripting in Flash MX is not intended as a reference, but as a learning text. As such, Kerman's style and focus will make sure this book stays close at hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Want to LEARN ActionScript - This book is for you!, January 14, 2003

This book is the shiznit! Kerman steps you through the concepts you need to know to become an excellent programmer! He uses real world examples and everyday language to simplify the learning process.

He doesn't teach you everything you can do with ActionScript...but he does provide the foundation that can turn any individual into a productive ActionScripter (and maybe even a productive software engineer)!

I recommend that you read this book first before you dive into any other book on ActionScripting. Every ActionScript book will make a lot more sense after you read this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful Foundation Book on ActionScripting in MX, August 13, 2002
By
SF Lynn (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: ActionScripting in Flash MX (Paperback)
If you'd been confused by or just been muddling through ActionScript and would like to learn how to program properly this is definitely the book for you. Phillip lays a foundation with key concepts and methods such as prototyping, separating code from data and de-bugging procedures and more then moves on to explain in plain English how to apply scripts and syntax so you can build Flash movies that go beyond just animation or hardwired features.

It's obvious Phillip's taught Flash in the real world because he specifically addresses issues that often confuse new users, he doesn't fall back on the "remember when you took that programming course" mentality, instead takes the time to explain points that are unfamiliar to someone who hasn't had a great deal of experience scripting. You might not even know what you don't know until you dive into this very thorough book. Use it as a foundation to put to use the more technical reference books on ActionScripting or to dissect conceptual Flash books like Flash to the Core or Flash deConsruction so you use the examples to customize effects and features you find interesting on your own.

I've done a fair amount of ActionScripting in Flash 5 and use Phillip's book as a guide to the new features of MX and to break myself of some bad habits I've picked up along the way. I share space with an experienced programmer who doesn't work with Flash on a regular basis and I've caught him using this book as a quick reference for syntax or features when the need arises to use ActionScript, so it's verbose enough to be useful to more than the intermediate user. If you're a designer who needs help with programming or someone familiar with OOP and need a guide to MX this is definitely a good choice that you'll use often.
