Product Description

Actiontec’s Coax Network Adapter Kit uses the existing coax wiring in a home or office to create a fast Ethernet network. Designed specifically for homes with cable TV, these adapters can handle consistent speeds up to 270Mbps, perfect for networking and connecting your home theater to the Internet. Connect any device that has an Ethernet or LAN port, including Blu-ray, Xbox 360, PS3, TiVo, computers and more. The adapter eliminates the need for rewiring or settling for less consistent wireless solutions. This kit has everything needed to set up a basic Ethernet over Coax network. The ECB2500CK01 does not support homes with satellite TV

Actiontec Electronics ECB2500CK01 Ethernet to Coax MoCA Adapter Kit: The Best Solution for Online Gaming and HD Video

The MoCA Network Adapter is a high-speed bridge that takes your coaxial network and, in conjunction with a router, delivers Ethernet networking access anywhere you have a coaxial port. Most of the leading broadband companies rely on coaxial networks in the home (network over a cable connection) because it is very fast and extremely reliable. Actiontec's

01 MoCA adapter kit uses the latest technology to provide you with flawless performance for your most demanding connected devices at an aggressive price point.

Powerful Performance

The ECB2500CK01 MoCA adapter kit delivers a strong and stable connection (up to 270Mbps**) that will allow you to experience silky-smooth streaming HD video without the lags and buffering associated with lower performance connections. The product supports QOS to manage your bandwidth, ensuring critical applications like video streaming get allocated the priority bandwidth.

Compatibility

If you can get a TV signal through your coax connection, MoCA will work. A MoCA coax network connection does not require a pre-existing MoCA router. Does NOT work with satellite, including DIRECTV and Dish Network.

Secure to Protect Your Privacy

The ECB2500CK01 MoCA adapter is hardware encrypted to protect your privacy. Users can also set up a password for restricted access.

Easy to Set Up and Easy to Use

The ECB2500CK01 MoCA adapter plugs into your current cable TV (coaxial) connections, giving you flexibility in where to connect, and eliminating the need for long cable pulls. It supports any Ethernet network-connected device, including cable boxes, Verizon FiOS, DVRs, Blu-ray players, DVD players, PlayStation PS3s, Xbox 360s, TiVos, PCs and more. (Satellite boxes are not supported.)

To set up the 01, just follow the four simple steps below:

  1. Plug an Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port of the adapter, and into an Ethernet port of the device to be connected to the network.
  2. Plug a coaxial cable into the coax "in" port of the adapter, and into the coax wall port nearest to the device to be connected to the network.
  3. Plug the power cable into the Power port on the back of the adapter, and into an electrical wall socket.
  4. Make sure the coax and Ethernet lights on the adapter are both illuminated solid green.

In summary, this is a wonderful product with bad setup instructions.

Turns your home coax wiring into great ethernet cables with your router, and they work on the same coax as your cable service!

I was very skeptical of this because I have used and put up with a similar device that does it over the electrical lines and it was stable but very slow. All of these devices are fine if you are only accessing the internet, but I have a large server with multi terrabytes of media that I like to stream through the house. I have a gigabit connection to every computer in the house, but I just couldn't get an ethernet cable downstairs to the TV, that was my issue.

As I said, with previous ethernet over powerline devices I was getting 2.5-3MB/s max through the devices. I was really needing more. So I gave this ethernet over coax a try because I have about 3 coax connections in each room, they are everywhere. I was not expecting much, but I was quite impressed. I ran many tests over the network to and from the server and I was getting a steady 9-10MB/s and it would peak up to 11.8MB/s, which is right at the ceiling of Fast ethernet which is what they chose to put on these devices. I firmly believe these could go faster if they had put in a gigabit port on it instead. That being said, i'm quite happy with this purchase. I'm getting FULL 100Mb/s speeds using this kit, I can stream even my largest 1080p mkv files to my TV now.

I can't recommend this kit enough, I've tried others, other technologies, but this one is amazing.

Turns your home coax wiring into great ethernet cables with your router, and they work on the same coax as your cable service!

Just installed this past week (Late July 2012), and the Actiontec Ethernet to Coax Adapter for Homes with Cable TV Service (ECB2500C) works great in my home with Comcast service (St Paul, MN) on the same coax line.

If you need fast stable ethernet connections, and you can't run wired ethernet Cat6e, and you have access to coax, then these are "must have" network enabling devices for Home TV/Media setups! Netflix/Hulu Plus streaming is fast on my devices, and transferring shows on my two Tivo Premieres is as fast as standard wired ethernet (given the bottleneck is reduced down to the Tivo's themselves, and not the wiring).

I speedtested and compared the bandwidth on my laptop between the best areas of wifi in my house and this directly connected to the MOCA adapter on the other end. With WiFi "N" I am getting 15Mbps Down / 5Mbps Up. Directly connected with the MOCA adapters, I'm getting 35Mbps Down, and 5.5 Mbps Up. Clearly a big difference on the downloads. Given that my 2nd TV/Entertainment setup is no where near the best WiFi range, WiFI is worse there...but obviously fantastic with MOCA.

I have replaced all my HomePlug (Home Powerline PNA) devices with these MOCA adapters, as I found the Home PowerLine plugs (and they are the 500Mbp rated ones) worked well at times, I found their reliability to be poor with at least monthly or more frequent resets, and sometimes poor "red blinking light" connections at times (interference with other things on my home electrical wiring?).

Like all good technology, the Actiontec MoCA Adapters not only help to solve a problem, but they do so in a simple and efficient manner. The problem in this case, refers to the following ... How do I provide a reliable and fast internet connection to the devices in remote areas of my home?

In the early days of the internet, this wasn't as much of a concern. Most people had a modem internal to their Pc's and had little else in their homes that required or could take advantage of an internet connection. Nowadays you would be hard pressed to find a piece of technology that doesn't take advantage of an internet connection in some way, shape or form. But the logistics of providing a reliable and fast internet connection to all areas in our homes has been somewhat elusive.

Sure there's always the wireless solution. I would hazard a guess that very few internet connected households lack wireless technology. Sadly, as most people have probably experienced first hand, Wi-Fi isn't always the most reliable, robust or even easiest solution to implement. Let's not even discuss all the security issues that come up as well. No, for most of us that want an easy to use, stable and fast internet connection, not much can beat a hard wired solution.

Unfortunately, with wires come other problems; chief among them is that most households aren't pre-wired for Ethernet. This is where the Actiontec MoCA Adapters come to the rescue. Note: there are also other options for extending a wired connection within a home, including power line adapters though those have their own limitations.

== In the Box ==

Missing from the product description are the exact contents of the box:
- Two Coax/Ethernet bridge devices
- Two power supplies. Unfortunately the power supplies are wall warts and are oriented sideways so in their most likely use case (a power strip) they will block other outlets.
- Two short coax cables
- Two short Ethernet cables
- One coax splitter (5MHz~2GHz)
- Quick Start guide
- *NO* software, which you will require if you want to configure the devices. You can get it from Actiontec's website. [...]
I was quite surprised and pleased to get a splitter and all the necessary cables in the box, but was a bit annoyed that there was no software.

The device works as advertised and doesn't REQUIRE configuration to set up, but unless you have a point of entry filter on your cable line, you almost certainly want to enable encryption. Otherwise, it's possible that one of your neighbors could connect a MoCA device to their line and access your network.

== Configuration ==

Device configuration isn't too difficult but it was more difficult than it needs to be. The Config/Run switch is unnecessarily difficult to access, you will require a pin or nail to get to it. You must also connect the device to a computer with DHCP enabled. (Most people are in this situation, but on my network I have manually configured my devices, so this was a pain). Finally, the software may fail to connect to the device once or twice. Once the connection is established, configuration is straightforward. I did run into one additional hitch with the password - the instructions online claim that the default password is 'admin' but on my devices the default password was blank.
