1.0 out of 5 stars Security and configuration issues, October 9, 2008
This review is from: Verizon 701C Modem (Personal Computers)
Not for beginners. Easy to set-up but it will leave security holes and you have to know how to deal with that. Comes with Verizon firmware - so Actiontech support will send you to Verizon support and viceversa.
Actiontech "tech" support is overseas-based, script-reading, using barely understandable English. They have NO knowledge of the product, settings and configuration. You can ask and explain as much as you like, you will get the same answer from the script and nothing else.
Can't find a setting to disable answering to PING from WAN side - and according to tech support you can't do that as per Verizon request (?!).
This is of course wrong. Firewall in High setting will block PINGs from WAN side but you have to configure manually the ports - a major headache.
So: - hard/impossible to configure, no tech support that you can speak of (and giving wrong info at that), leaves security holes that you have to know how to plug, has the added limits of the Verizon firmware.
Verizon customers: - BEFORE installing this modem release your IP address (do ipconfig/release). After you install you will have the DSL connection but will can't access the Internet - you still have to access http:/192.168.1.1/restricted/verizon and use the on/off button to get connected = so you can access the Internet. If you call Verizon tech support (because you can't connect) they will tell you to do that.
Another note for Verizon users: west coast users and east coast users have different settings! Just because you find on some forum/review/post Verizon settings does not necessarily mean that is applicable to you.
For WEST coast: DCHP=Yes, IP dynamic=Yes ;
Detail settings see below:
Verizon DSL (CA state),
VPI=0, VCI=35,
MAC encapsulation=Yes
Routing=LLC/SNAP Bridging,
Obtain IP Address Automatically,
Connection type=MER,
Service name=mer_0_35(default),
Servicd category=UBR(UBRw/oPCR),
Service state=NAT,
Firewall=enabled,
IGMP Multicast,
Quality of service=disabled,
user/password=admin/admin to start.
Hope that this helps.

1.0 out of 5 stars Did not function as advertized, November 23, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Verizon 701C Modem (Personal Computers)
This product was advertized being able to work as a DSL-to-Ethernet Router or Bridge. The Bridge mode does not work!!! I tried everything tech-support suggested as well as a replacement device with no success.

3.0 out of 5 stars Frustrating but finally works., November 6, 2010

This review is from: Verizon 701C Modem (Personal Computers)
I replaced a Westell 6100 with this modem after the Westell modem quit working. The modem was easy to set-up with the help of Verizon's Tech-Support but was unstable. The modem would lose the DSL connection for a few seconds approx. every two minutes. I tried connecting to a different phone jack then a different computer but the problem persisted. Finally I came across a website that suggested changing the LAN setting, through the modem's GUI, to 192.168.99.1. (Log into the modem's GUI then--->Advanced Setup--->LAN IP Address). This did the trick and although this modem seems slower than the Westell modem at least it now consistently holds the DSL connection. Cheers.
