Active matrix liquid crystal displays (AMLCDs) are the preferred choice when thin, low power, high quality, and lightweight flat panel displays are required. Here is the definitive guide to the theory and applications of AMLCDs.

Contemporary portable communication and computing devices need high image quality, light weight, thin, and low power flat panel displays. The answer to this need is the color active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD). The rides of AMLCD technology over less than two decades to undisputed dominance as a flat panel display has been breathtaking, and designers of portable devices need a thorough understanding of the theory and applications of AMLCDs. Willem den Boer, a holder of over 30 patents in imaging technologies, has created this guide to AMLCD theory, operating principles, addressing methods, driver circuits, application circuits, and alternate flat display technologies (including active matrix flat panel image sensors). Numerous design and applications examples illustrate key points and make them relevant to real-world engineering tasks.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good introductory text, October 5, 2007

Satisfied user (San Jose, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Displays: Fundamentals and Applications (Paperback)
"Fundamentals" is right in the title. Covers AMLCD physics, technology and manufacturing in a very straightforward and easy to read text. It is useful if you are curious about how AMLCD's work, but does not have enough depth for serious study.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good technical info on displays, April 4, 2011
This review is from: Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Displays: Fundamentals and Applications (Paperback)
This is a very well written explanation on how active matrix displays work. It goes into a lot of general detail. I would say this is aimed at electrical engineers, but it is on a relatively low level.

I found this to be one of the few engineering books that are well written and clear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book, excellent introduction to AMLCD displays, April 26, 2010

This review is from: Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Displays: Fundamentals and Applications (Paperback)
This is one of rare technical books that is enjoyable to read. It provides a step-by-step introduction into device physics, technology, and manufacturing of active matrix liquid crystal displays - in an easy and reader-friendly manner. The author explains the basic device physics of LCDs, gives a historical perspective, provides typical geometrical and physical parameters values - so that the reader can get a "feel" of the problem (the order of magnitude of the parameters and quantities involved, why things are done in this or that way - both from scientific/physics perspective, and from the manufacturing and technological constraints viewpoint). There is a very good balance between rigorous scientific material, and empirical knowledge in this book. As a novice in LCD area (but having a strong device physics background) I had many specific questions on the structure, operation principle, and issues in LCDs - with most of these questions answered in the book. I can only wish that all the books on semiconductor device physics and technology would be that well written.

Congratulations, Dr. den Boer!
