Laugh out loud funny, but with so much heart.,

Who thought that reading about life in an independent living center would make me laugh so much. I swear I was the one needing Depends (and I'm only 42!). The characters are just that...characters! But underneath all the quirks, you can see the progression of friendship and love and support. I will be sharing this with family and friends for years to come and will use this as my training guide if I ever move to an Inn.

This is NOT "Just for Seniors"!,
This review is from: Active Senior Living (Kindle Edition)
Whether you are a Senior, the loved one of a Senior or are just looking for a "good read", this story will "warm the cockles of your heart" as well as "provide food for thought".I agree with the reviewer who campares Jan C urran's writing to Jan Koran's. Both authors understand the meaning and importance of true friendship, have the ability to deal with potentially scary life-issues with compassion and humor, and leave me hoping for sequels.

a great must read,

My name is Stan but I am NOT the Stan described in this riotous and wise book. I'm not as old as him, but after laughing myself silly and wiping a few heartfelt tears as I read Ms. Curran's book on my Kindle, I look forward to that age with a grateful smile. I had no idea that being his age(90's)could be such a rewarding and joyous adventure. Ms. Curran has the perfect formula: abundant humor, a keen and mature emotional balance and a readiness to enjoy and share with others. I hope I have learned some of these traits with this great read. Surely, if humor was gold and thoughfulness was beauty Ms. Curran's grand book would make her richer than Fort Knox and more lovely than the Mona Lisa. I hope she is there when I start my own senior living.

Delightful read with valuable insights,

Active Senior Living is a delightful read. The quality of the writing and the editing is very good, which is sometimes lacking in Kindle edition books. I found myself laughing and crying with Jan, reliving her experiences moving in and settling into life at an "Active Senior Living Community", her encounters with the other "inmates", and the sweetness of the interactions with the residents there as they developed bonding friendships. Not only is this an entertaining read, but it is also an enlightening one. With my parents approaching the age where either an independent senior living facility or an assisted one may soon be required, the insights into the advantages and the pitfalls of these facilities provide kind of a guidepost for what to look for when evaluating various alternatives.

Since I am in my 60s and since I visit a retirement home once a month, I enjoyed getting some perspective on what it is like to uproot from the safety and security of your home and past life and move into a new community of people. It gave me food for thought, though the people I see in the retirement home seem much mellower than some Jan described. I enjoyed seeing her go from being an outsider to one who was willing to make useful changes for the sake of other residents. It was a book of hope and reality sparring for victory and meaning.

Funny and touching,

Every good thing you have heard about this book is true. Curran proves that she is more than an accomplished journalist, she is also blessed with excellent insights into the human heart and the essence of interpersonal relationships -- be it with friends, family or strangers. You will honestly care about these people as if you knew them personally.

I stumbled across Senior Living while reading the Amazon Kindle discussions. After hearing such praise for the book, I decided to give it a try. What a pleasant surprise! The story was entertaining, funny, and believable. I read the book in a matter of hours, and would love to read even more about the residents of the Active Senior Living Center!

This is a book for people of all ages. The author's warmth and dignity shine through so clearly that by the end of the book, you feel you know her, perhaps even feel she could be your aunt.Though the book deals with some very serious issues, the author doesn't grow sentimental or maudlin. It is a real gift to be able to view and write about these issues with humor and honesty. Growing older may not be for sissies, but the book clearly shows it isn't as horrible as many of us imagine--especially when you have friends. Thank you, Jan, for sharing your experience in this gem called ACTIVE SENIOR LIVING.
