Book Description

April 27, 2009
Stephen Crane was a late 19th century American novelist, poet, short story writer and journalist. He wrote in the Realist tradition as well as early examples of American Naturalism and Impressionism. In 1895 The Red Badge of Courage brought him national acclaim. The Open Boat was written about a few days Crane spent marooned in a dingy off the coast of Cuba. Active Service was written in 1899. The Greco-Turkish War of 1897 is the setting for Active Service. Some critics believed that Crane wrote Active Service as a parody of the romantic adventure fiction of the time.
