Amazon.com Review
Because more women than men now go on adventure vacations, Evelyn Kaye put together a unique guide to adventure outfits that cater to women who want to hike, bike, climb, walk, ride, snorkel, raft, canoe, and sail their way around the world. And should inspiration be desired, Kaye also includes true tales of trips already taken, from Fanny Bullock Workman's 1895 "Bicycle Riding in Algeria" and Ida Pfeiffer's 1848 "Tiger Hunt in India" to Effie Fletcher's "Preparing for the Himalayas" of 1996. There are 33 stories, past and present, plus 54 organizations offering 1,001 adventure trips for women of all ages, backgrounds, and states of fitness.
From Library Journal
Kaye, the author of numerous travel books (e.g., Amazing Traveler: Isabella Bird, LJ 11/15/94), defines an adventure vacation as one in which you physically participate as opposed to observing passively on a tour. She first addresses the proper preparations for adventure and then relates such early ventures by women in the past. Contributing writers then tell their firsthand experiences at cycling, kayaking, hiking, river-rafting, trekking, mountain climbing, and sailing. The final section is extremely helpful for planning because it contains a list of companies that specialize in adventure travel?addresses, telephone numbers, E-mail, web sites, prices, and sample trips. Kaye's book provides a delightful balance between entertaining travel stories of others and resources to plan your own trip.?Melinda Stivers Leach, Precision Editorial Svcs., Wondervu, Col.
