4.0 out of 5 stars The classics have come back!, October 18, 2002

10 different Atari 2600 games. Fun but the only games I really enjoyed were Pitfall and River Raid, you might want to wait for the Atari 10 in 1 that comes out xmas 2002 that will offer the real Atari classics, not just the Activision classics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple, fast, and fun -- but only 10 games?, November 14, 2002

I can't say whether kids will find this entertaining and some of the games are too difficult for young ones. For nostalgia though, it's a great idea.

The controller is comfortably oversized and the buttons have a nice rubbery feel. To fire you push the right directional pad up -- odd. Fortunately it doesn't change game play or feel. The on screen directions consistently refer to the fire button as the "D" button. On my controller it is labeled "4".

The emulation is good, but misses in some areas. For instance, in Atlantis you can't see the bullets you fire. That's the worst case. In Pitfall! the swinging vine has a few extra pixels and when Harry is underground he "floats" slightly above the floor. Although slightly distracting, none of these quirks prevent you from playing the games.

Speaking of the games, it's a shame there's only 10 --Activision (and Imagic since Atlantis is included) had some other really great titles. A few of the games are more fun with two players, like Freeway, Ice Hockey, Boxing, and Tennis. You can't buy a second controller and connect the two.

This product compares favorably to the forthcoming (or available now) Atari version. In the Atari unit, the controller is apparently an exact replica of the original joystick. But the games are a mixed bag with some better suited to the paddle controller (like Breakout).

If you want to play a quick game that won't take days to complete and fumble around with a console and discs, this is a inexpensive and fun product.

Old games from when I was a kid. Boring but fun enough, easy to learn and play. Brings back memories from Atari 2600. Wish there was better instructions on how to play the game, mostly going from memory. Very convenient to be all in one little joypad.
