Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

This thoroughly revised, updated, and expanded edition offers a practical resource for teachers who work with special students in grades 6-12. It is an essential aid to help middle and high school students gain the social skills necessary for success in school and in life. Designed as a self-contained program, the book outlines a flexible, ready-to-use approach (complete with reproducible activities) to help exceptional students learn and put into practice appropriate ways to behave among others. The activities offered here not only teach kids how to get along with others, but also help them learn to control a situation by actively participating and contributing to the social outcome.

Veteran special educator Darlene Mannix provides 20 complete teaching units focusing on essential social skills such as being a good listener, "reading" other people, and using common sense. These are followed by 75 reproducible worksheets that help students practice applying the social skills to real-life situations in five different settings: home, school, work, among peers, and in the community. The worksheets cover routine as well as unusual situations and can be used in any order after students have completed the basic social skills training outlined in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great summer activity project!, April 21, 2002
By
Lemelia J. Bonner (Cary, NC United States) - See all my reviews
I stumbled upon this book while looking for resources on NLD (nonverbal learning disorder), which has caused my bright, 12-year-old son to flounder both academically and socially since fourth grade. It is FULL of excellent activities for children who have difficulty picking up social cues and interacting appropriately with their peers. Because my son works so hard during the regular school year, and typical summer programs and camps only cause him anxiety, we now opt to let him just take time off from organized activity during his summer breaks. But he will be assisting in the family home business, and now we plan to incorporate the exercises in this book into his daily schedule. They are interesting and fun, and even I look forward to working on them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Problem solving and social skills training resource, August 2, 2008

The people behind this book worked hard to expand on their topics in a realistic way. I can easily use the majority of their topics as I work with with teen-age students. The information that is presented is not too simple for students who are in regular education classes, even though it was designed for special education students. The age-appropriate activities and topics bring on discussion that is neccesary for students as they work towards better interactions with others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Exercises, January 21, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have two stepsons, ages 10, one with PDD-NOS and the other with Aspergers. We have done the first two lessons with my stepson who has PDD-NOS and it is really covering subjects that are vital to his social success. The book approaches them in fairly mature ways that are still simple enough for him. I think it would be appropriate for children older than him but I liked this book for him more than the other version for younger children. I think he is right on the edge for age appropriate for this book, so I would recommend it for over 10 years.
