I used the Actron kit to replace the brake fluid in my jeep. I removed the Master Cylinder cover, then sucked the fluid out each wheel cylinder bleed valve individually (while topping off the reservoir with fresh fluid) until each cylinder ran clean. It was a one man operation with all the bubbles coming out the bleed screw (I put some grease on the bleed screw fittings so my tygon tubing made a good seal). I bought an extra length of tygon tubing at the hardware store so I could have extra room.

This works if you know what you are doing. For those that are a new mechanic wannabe, take heed...

1) You have to figure out how to seal the reservoir because it does not comes with an O ring. Mine did not come with one.

2) Once you figure out that you need to put some of the sealing gook that it comes with carefully so you have enough left to seal any brake line valves, then you are in business, and hope you have enough to complete one car.

The gook that it came with is too little to complete my job, I was only able to bleed the clutch cylinder and that was it. Lucky for me, that is what I bought this pump for. "I'm thinking back in my mind... What a waste, they should have included a seal. Will I have enough to complete this job and get this truck out of the desert today?" (Very stressful when you have to spend [...] on gas just to get to the vehicle that you are going to work on and the next auto parts store is 50+ miles away)

They don't mention that if you going to use it for commercial use, you should buy extra tube, jar, or a gallon along with the pump. (As for me? I see that this thing is just a one time use that served its purpose and it will just be a relic sitting on the shelf for the next 10 years or until the clutch cylinder on my truck need replacing, that's if I can find more gook or use some rice pudding or something, and I know I will be reminising... Ahhh, the tool that I used to get my truck out of the desert single handed! LOL)

3) You have to be very careful not to get any brake fluid in the pump, if you do, you need to know how to clean it, or else you are screwed, and most likely you will get some fluid in it, because the container is too small or shallow.

I bought the Actron Kit to bleed the rear brakes for my motorcycle. The Actron kit is made of metal and comes with the standard jar to hold your fluids, hoses, and that's about everything you need to bleed your brakes. The reason I bought this kit was because of the gauge on the pump so I could see if there was a leak somewhere in the system. I tried using the kit by connecting the black hose to the pump and the jug. From the jug there would be a clear hose to see if there are any bubbles in the fluid that you draw to the bleeder nipple. Unfortunately, I was never able to create a vacuum due to the flawed design of the jug. I tested every connection with the pump and gauge and I could always create a vacuum until I connected the hoses to the jug. This jug is also relatively small will probably not be able to hold that much fluid, and once the fluid gets to the top it will be sucked by the pump. Fortunately, the pump is metal and you're able to clean it. I had high hopes from this kit but it didn't work out for me.

The cover does not seal tightly on the cup, after putting grease between the two, I was able to draw a vacuum. The cup/cover should be redesigned,
a little larger would be nice as well.
Need to use a lot of silicone grease(included)on the bleeder screw threads to get them to seal.
After fixing those two problems, the pump itself works great.

It's not made in USA.(Which helps China and hurts the US)

"easier brake bleeding without the mess" - unfortunately, that was not my experience.

1) a lot of my time/effort even after using sealing lubricant was spent ensuring that air does not enter through the gaps between the cup and the cup cover. The design of the cup is flawed - shouldn't the cup cover atleast tightly fit the cup?.

2) air leaked through the threads of the bleeder screw, and there isn't any way to prevent it. I don't know if other kits prevent this problem. Fortunately, this problem didn't have a severe impact on the outcome.

3) the glass on the vaccum dial broke even under normal use.

I hope Actron fixes design flaw #1 and #3.

This is much easier to use than good old fashioned 2 person brake bleeding/fluid replacement without a doubt. The premise is that a single person with a manual hand-held vacuum pump can pull brake fluid and bubbles out of the system instead of forcing it out with someone pumping the pedal in the car. It accomplishes this, but there are some other frustrations to deal with. First, the system relies on an airtight seal around the bleeder screw threads, between the bleeder screw nozzle and the bleeder adapter in the kit, between the bleeder adapter to the hose, from the hose to the canister, the canister lid to the canister, the canister lid to the pump hose, the pump hose to the pump, and of course the pump itself can't leak. The problem that I read about before I bought this kit is definitely a warranted complaint. The two main vacuum leaks are around the bleeder screw threads, inside the bleeder screw adapter, and the canister lid seal. The first problem could be solved with a grease/sealant that doesn't dilute with brake fluid and become useless. But the sealant provided in this kit is quickly and easily washed off with brake fluid, and it won't stick to any surface already wet with brake fluid. This plus they give you such a tiny tube of it, you're only going to get one brake bleeding job done with it. The second problem is the bleeder screw adapters are not a consistent size inside and out. The opening looks like the right size, but that's just a lip. Once you snap it on there, the inside is much wider than the bleeder screw, so make sure you lube that puppy up good with the grease and use a smaller size adapter than you think you'll need. Trust me, you'll thank me for that. The biggest problem with the kit itself is that the canister lid and canister seal is just hard plastic.Read more ›
