5.0 out of 5 stars Georgie Gets a Facelift, August 13, 2010
This review is from: One Acts of Note 2008 (Paperback)
"Georgie Gets a Facelift" (a short play included in this anthology) has received some excellent critical praise recently, including:

"In Daniel Guyton's Georgie Gets a Facelift, the blackest of black comedies, the suicide attempts of the title character (played by Joey Folsom) keep getting interrupted by the telephone and the doorbell. In these days of screened calls, the hero's compulsion to pick up the receiver seems almost quaint. But as directed... by Chad Cline, Folsom, Stephanie Hall as a Girl Scout and LisaAnne Haram as Georgie's mom turn in crisply hilarious performances.
Pegasus founder Kurt Kleinmann's new companion piece, Thank You Berry Much, uses a similar constellation of characters and the same actors. Their characterizations are nicely discriminated from the previous play, and the show holds your attention. But Guyton's delightfully perverse script is the one that you'll remember." --Lawson Taitte, Dallas Morning News

"Dan Guyton's Georgie Gets a Facelift opens with an image that shouldn't be as funny as it is: a young man (Joey Folsom), pointing a gun into his own mouth. But thanks to Folsom's expert delivery and Lisa Anne Haram's hilarious performance as his all-abiding mother, this darkest-of-dark-comedies had the audience in sti...tches. I don't want to spoil too much of the surprise of the opening moments, but let me say that Stephanie Hall does some of the funniest corpse work I've ever seen.
Guyton's piece is followed by Kurt Kleinmann's new work Thank You Berry Much, which was clearly written to be a companion to Georgie. It's a good opportunity for Folsom and Haram to demonstrate their acting range, but an even better opportunity for Hall to steal the show as a Girl Scout with attitude. This second part isn't as hard-hitting as Georgie, but it served as a commentary on the earlier show. It's the sign of a good director (Chad Cline) that two consistently shocking scripts end up seeming so lighthearted." --Will Arberry, D Magazine

"Can suicide, serial murder and a potty-mouthed girl scout be funny? Hell yeah, as proven by Daniel Guyton's tarpit-dark comedy Georgie Gets a Facelift and its equally twisted companion piece, Thank You Berry Much, by Kurt Kleinmann.
In Georgie, Joey Folsom is a serial killer whose final ...victim will be himself. His plans are foiled by his ever-intrusive mom (LisaAnne Haram) and another event that's too good to spoil here (it involves a character played by Stephanie Hall). Thank You is Georgie's prequel, and the three actors play similar characters in each. Kleinmann has created a brilliant setup for the hilarious shocker of the first play, and placing the prequel second in the lineup was the absolute right choice for this bundle.
Directed by Chad Cline, the ensemble is outstanding on all counts. Hall delivers a painfully funny turn, without saying anything, in Georgie. Folsom evokes the put-upon son in both shows with Jimmy Stewart-like melancholy.
The beauty of both plays lies in the writing, which is snappy, succinct and original. The opening scene in Georgie is comic gold, and the closing lines in both could not be more perfect.
Churchmouse is an offshoot of Pegasus Theatre, known for its Living Black and White plays. Pegasus co-founder and artistic director Kleinmann has always had an affinity for outrageous comedy, and this spin-off group allows him to return to those roots.
Long may Churchmouse roar." --Mark Lowry, Theatre Jones
