3.0 out of 5 stars An overwhelming amount of information
There is an incredible amount of information in this book. Clearly, it was very well researched. The author brought to it a career built on understanding TCM and acupuncture, and also went out of her way to uncover all the latest research on how TCM treats women's health issues. The nutritional information was, in particular, new and enlightening.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this book!, December 21, 2009
This review is from: Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine for Women's Health: Bridging the Gap Between Western and Eastern Medicine (Paperback)
This book was FULL of amazing information! A great resource for someone who doesn't know much about chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture, but also really informative for those who have dabbled and are well-versed in holistic care. It was an easy read, not overwhelming despite the breadth of information. There are clear diagrams and the context is so interesting and easy to understand. Although I feel fairly knowledgeable on the subject, Kathleen's book dispelled a lot of myths I have heard and questioned on acupunture and chinese medicine.

As a women, this book was invaluable. I bought copies for all of the women in my life!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Information!, December 18, 2009

This review is from: Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine for Women's Health: Bridging the Gap Between Western and Eastern Medicine (Paperback)
This book cleared up many misconceptions I had regarding Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and explained all of the concepts in a very understandable way. I was amazed to read about all of the various conditions, illnesses and diseases that TCM can treat. The information on gynecological issues and infertility alone is worth the price of the book! I think that any woman struggling with infertility (or any unresolved or baffling condition, for that matter) will find this book and Dr. Albertson a Godsend! Her years of experience and vast expertise in this field make her an extremely valuable resource to anyone lucky enough to live near her Irvine, California practice. For those that don't live near her office, I highly recommend this book to you; I know it will be the missing link to your good health that you have been looking for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent west vs east medical care for women, December 16, 2009
This review is from: Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine for Women's Health: Bridging the Gap Between Western and Eastern Medicine (Paperback)
What I like about the book is it is very informative beginning on page 7 where the author writes about how treatment protocols differ between the east and west. And how eastern medicine is more hands on, observe more and actually listens well to the client. Also like how on page 9 she challenges the reader to become a Pro Active Patient. Her information on Acupuncture is one of the best I have ever read.

Chapter 17 which is about the history of TCM or traditional Chinese medicine is interesting just for the historical aspects alone. And her glossary is excellent as well. She covers so many issues of interest to all women, from menses to post menopause.

This review is from: Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine for Women's Health: Bridging the Gap Between Western and Eastern Medicine (Paperback)
I was interested in reading how different cultures view medicinal and medicine as treatments. It is good to know the alternative forms of medicine are effective.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's like a Cliff's Notes of TCM, May 8, 2010
By
This review is from: Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine for Women's Health: Bridging the Gap Between Western and Eastern Medicine (Paperback)
When I opened up this book to start reading the author's business card fell out and on it says "Gentle, Caring Approach." I'm sure it was intended to describe Dr. Kathleen Albertson's TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) modalities but I can also say the same thing for her book "Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine for Women's Health."

Being an advocate of acupuncture and Chinese herbs I found Albertson's book a godsend. I've never been able to find a book that is so simple to read, yet extremely informative. Albertson understands that the lay woman needs the facts in simple language - a language that is understandable and dissectible.

For example, if you've had acupuncture you were probably told you are either hot or cold and practitioner proceeds to balance you but you really don't know what that means. You just put the trust into the practitioner. However, Albertson explains the terms in understandable words. She also gives direction and understanding of why this has happened and the symptoms.

Furthermore, the book is specifically directed for women and addresses the various issues women have: menstruation, endometriosis, infertility, pregnancy, and perimenopause/menopause. As well, Albertson provides an extensive glossary and bibliography, Western knowledge, and TCM studies and research.

I certainly have no problem recommending this book to young women that are having issues or those that want to prevent issues. It is written in simple lay terms, is concise, and extremely informative. As well, I believe this would be a great book in a practitioner's lending library or on a TCM school's recommended reading list. It's like a Cliff's Notes of TCM.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Alternative Worth Looking Into, February 4, 2010
This review is from: Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine for Women's Health: Bridging the Gap Between Western and Eastern Medicine (Paperback)
I found Dr. Kathleen Albertson's, PhD, holistic alternatives for women's health care both logical and eye-opening. She integrates Western and Eastern thought and practice in a patient-based approach that is lacking in many realms of today's modern medicine. I highly recommend this book for women suffering from chronic pain and from any other number of issues, resulting in infertility and intestinal problems to chronic headaches and menopausal discomforts. I particularly liked her chapter on "What to expect when you visit an acupuncturist."

5.0 out of 5 stars Make Sure This is In Your Library!, January 14, 2010
This review is from: Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine for Women's Health: Bridging the Gap Between Western and Eastern Medicine (Paperback)
This book is a treasure for all women. The author, Dr. Kathleen Albertson shows how Traditional Chinese Medicine can be a part of any woman's healthcare options - even primary care. If you consider yourself a "pro-active patient" and want to explore the best treatment options for your well-being, then I highly recommend this book. Traditional Chinese medicine can offer great hope for all women - especially any woman who has had gyn "issues" including infertility and menopause. Whether you are a healthy woman wanting to know more or a woman for whom Western medicine seems to be failing, you will get something out of this book it. It also is a great "Desk Reference Manual" to return to again and again. Get it! I did!

3.0 out of 5 stars An overwhelming amount of information, January 11, 2010

This review is from: Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine for Women's Health: Bridging the Gap Between Western and Eastern Medicine (Paperback)
There is an incredible amount of information in this book. Clearly, it was very well researched. The author brought to it a career built on understanding TCM and acupuncture, and also went out of her way to uncover all the latest research on how TCM treats women's health issues. The nutritional information was, in particular, new and enlightening.

Personally, though, I found it to be too much. I was overwhelmed reading this book. There was so much information that I wasn't quite sure whether this book was really intended for a layperson. It felt, at times, like a resource for an Eastern medicine practitioner.

Its not to say that no one would enjoy this book. If you are woman getting TCM or acupuncture and would like a deeper understanding of your illness or treatment, or would like nutritional information as well, you may really enjoy it. For me, though, this book wasn't worth the labor it took to read.
